Hi Zoe To find film numbers: Go to www*familysearch*org (replace stars with dots) Click on 'Search for ancestors in our vast record collection' Click on 'Family History Library catalogue' Put the place you are looking for in 'Place search' Keep clicking on the underlined blue hyperlinks until you find a box in the top right hand corner taht says 'film notes' That will give you the film number - then you have to get yourself down to the nearest LDS family history centre and order it. When it comes in look foreward to spending time reading through it.....but remember, some of the records are in poor condition, so you may still be disappointed. Original records were also copied as bishop's transcripts so there may be a second chance... Peter

Hi to everyone, Just been back on GR and lots of help found, Thanks to everyone. I am not sure but I think his marriage would be before 1837 as his first son (well I think his first) was born 1839. I wrote down my fhc telephone number and I am going to phone them after easter. I also wrote down a place in canterbury where I think the records have been deposited, I shall contact them too. How did you get the film numbers for the parish? I am learning more each day thanks to all of you. I am sincerely greatful to everyone Zoe x

I don't know if you realise that you can buy the fiche (copies of the church records reduce in size to fit around 20 pages on a postcard size fiche) you can take that to your local FHC and use their viewer (which brings them back up to size so you can read it) but ask them first if you can look at your own fiche. If you know where they were and hopfully they were in the church records you will be able to view them yourself. They cost around £2.50 per fiche (well they did upto a couple of years ago. Or your local LDS can order them to be sent to their nearest centre for you. The IGI are still putting what church records they have on their site, there is also another site called Hugh Wallis batch numbers, this lets you view church records by surname only, follow the trail to the parish church you want then ask for the surname, they should have christenings and marriages, there is sometimes a bit more information on this site then on the IGI, but mostly it can be the same information. Again this is still not complete. Irene

Hi Zoe and Julie, I've just checked that page on 1837, no Mary Precious. The only Precious name on that page is a Sarah, married in Howden district. The page covers names Pratt to Price, so think that would cover spelling variations too. Debbie

Hi Peter, Sherryl & Gwynne, Thanks for all your help, I will try that, I have been looking on google for parish churches that I can order from. I really wanted to do this for my nan, she is 86 bless her. I wanted to present her with her family tree all printed up. But I suppose she will have to wait a while, she is really interested and keeps asking me how I ask somebody on a computer when you can't see them, bless her. Thanks again Zoe

Hi Zoe, I know how frustrating it can be. I don't live anywhere near where any of my ancestors come from so use the LDS (as suggested by Sherryl). The LDS have filmed the parish record for Blean on film FHL BRITISH Film 1836031 Items 4-14 If you take the number to an LDS centre they will order it for you for £2.70 and you have a month to search it there. I use parloc to find nearby parishes and move outwards in a spiral. 6 years on I'm still searching for one elusive marriage. If you don't know where your nearest centre is this will help you find it http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp Good Hunting, Gwynne

Hi Zoe, Don`t know if anyone else has suggested this, but a lot of the Parish records are on film/fiche and these can be ordered in through any branch of the Mormon Church - you don`t have to be a church member. Living in New Zealand, I`ve had a lot of success tracking my elusive WALLIS family in London over the past few years using these records. Happy hunting! Sherryl

Zoe I've been looking for family in Essex and London for 20+ years and it isn't easy because I'm in New Zealand!! Be assured if they want you to find them, they will turn up!! Recently an aged aunt visited her local records office and sent me a photocopy of a page in 1805 which had my great great great grandmothers marriage as the first of four entries. She thought she had done so well (which she had even though I already had the date). What she hadn't seen was the last entry on the page which placed my Krafft family in Colchester 50 years before I thought they were there - and I had been searching Germany!! It is slow, sometimes you leave it, but you always come back. I can give my new grandson his maternal family back to all 32 of his gg granparents - if you stick to it you may be able to do the same for your bby - even if you are a grandmother first.... If you need help searching feel free to ask - I too can make time to help you, but recognise taht sometimes the answers aren't yet there..... Peter

Helen, You really do tell it straight and I like that, well it upsets me a bit but I really do understand what you mean the message wasn't meant to sound moany but I know it did. I didn't mean to disrespect anyone and I know everyone is very helpful and friendly I just hope I haven't blown it now because I was hoping to become a GR chatter. I will try my library I did ask in one nearby but they only had info on that area, I live in Sheffield and all my family come from down Kent, London area so I will try the big library in Sheffield city centre. Thankyou for your help Zoe

Ken, Thanks for your advice its seems a good idea, I do know what you mean. Like when you lose something you find it when you least expect it. Zoe

Zoe If you want to help yourself without spending money, you can join your local library. They should have a family history section with lots of books on different aspects of family history and can probably get others if you request it (this might cost a small amount). Then when you're frustrated and the baby is asleep you can read up a bit. The library may also have internet access and it will have a photocopier. My library has maps of the whole country which I have found very useful, as well as books on the history of virtually every county, which is great background reading for research. I didn't mean to upset you, but I thought your thread title was a bit moany, that's all. as you can see from this thread, lots of GR people have tried to find things for you. nell

Zoe don't give up, this is a very frustrating hobby, take a break come back in a few days you may think of something while not thinking if you get what I mean. Try another branch of the family, but remember most of all don't rush it, your rellies have been there for many years and they are not going to go away now. More information comes on-line all the time it may have to be a question of waiting for it. I hope you accept this advice in the spirit it is intended and not take offence. Good hunting.
