Lou Thank you for looking - you've earned your cuppa! I did a search on 1881 with just Emily and her birth year and place and trawled through tons of Emilys but none looked remotely likely. So frustrating, but at least I know when/where she got married and died. I got all excited when I went to Richmond Local History Centre and found that living next door to her brother on the electoral roll was her future husband, so I guess she met him over the garden fence! nell

Nell Just so you don't think you're talking to yourself, I spent about an hour earlier having a look after seeing your thread last night. I see what you mean about the lady being well hidden or hideously mistranscribed cos I couldn't see anything on either census that you can even have said 'Well she's a possible'! Will have another mooch when I've made a cuppa! Lou

Ladies Thank you all so much. Yes, I did find the Emily Smoothy b. East Molesey, father Arthur. As far as I know they are not related to my Smoothys :-( My Smoothy family started with John Smoothy who was born in Chelmsford and moved to Richmond with his wife shortly after they married in Kennington. Their 4 children were all born at 24, The Green, Richmond which he kept as a lodging house. Around 1875 [that year's street directory is missing from Richmond Local Studies Centre!] he moved to Vestry Cottage and remained there as parish beadle/vestry messenger/coroner's officer/assistant overseer of the poor until he died in 1894. I am sure Emily Esther was working in 1881 and 1891 but I just don't know where - I've found her parents and siblings, but she must be very badly mistranscribed SOMEWHERE!!! Thanks again, everyone, for looking. nell

My missing auntie: SMOOTHY, Emily Esther 1862 Born in Richmond, Surrey 18 March and baptised 27 April. 1871 she is 10, a scholar, with her family at 24 The Green, Richmond. 1881 her mother, father and her younger brother and sister were all living at Vestry Cottage, Richmond. [Her elder sister, Elizabeth Louisa, was an undermaid in a household in Speldhurst - mistranscribed as Smothey.] 1901 she is 39, living unmarried and unoccupied with her sister Elizabeth, who is now a widow, in Wandsworth. Can anyone find her 1881/1891 pleeeeease? nell

I've been doing a bit more on my Smoothy family and realise that although I know where she lived at the end of her life, I have lost my great-great aunt in 1881 and 1891.
