I need to pop along to check some census records next week so if anyone needs anything looked up post here. N.B. Most of their material is specifically for Kingston Borough and NOT Surrey - they have census with indexes, local directories, transripts of parish registers, old photos. Please don't send personal messages as I can just print off this thread to take with me.

Well Zoe, I'd love to take you up on your offer, but my Surrey lot seem to be from Richmond rather than Kingston. Kind offer anyway, hope you find what you're looking for.

Thank you so much for this offer. I have a whole raft of PENSTON rellies in Kingston which I should love to have some early census info on. How big was Kingston in the middle part of the 19th century? I can't expect you to plod through hundreds of streets looking for my Penstons but if you come across any I should be so delighted. I have an address for Jabez Penston who was living in Thames Street in 1851 so if you could look for him and household that would be great. However, if there is a name index all the Penstons will be mine and I should so appreciate a note of any that are around in 1841/51. Once again, many thanks.

Ness if i remember rightly they have card indexes to names for the 1841 and possibly the 1851 too. Paul dya wanna let me know names becaues I'm pretty certain the Pigots/Kellys directories cover Richmond too so I may be able get you addresses that'll help you out. and I can look for other stuff if they have it

Zoe, I hope this makes sense. I'm looking for the following family group; Found in "Artichoke Alley", Richmond (great name !) in 1871 (head) James HALL, born circa 1834 Hampton Middlesex (wife) Ann Margaret born circa 1840 Richmond (son) Alfred James Richard, born 1862 Brentford (daug) Annie Isabella , born 1863 Brentford (daug) Mary Helen, born 1869 Richmond (daug) Rosina Jane, born 1871 Richmond No sign of any of these in 1881, 1891 or 1901 censuses (apart from Rosina who appears with her husband in 1901). Alfred James Richard HALL married Annie Wilkinson in Sep 1881 in Bethnal Green. They had a daughter the following Jan, Clara Jane HALL (my grandmother). At that time they were at Clarence Street, Richmond. Again, no sign of Clara (or parents) on later censuses. James was a "carrier", Alfred James was a Stonemason. Clara married my Grandfather in May 1903, in West Hampstead. Residence listed as Richmond. I'm told that she had previously been "in service". They moved shortly afterwards to North Bucks. Basically... if you can find any of these, anywhere... then you're doing better than me :o) Paul

Dear Zoe, I'm not sure whether Kingston borough includes Kingston upon Thames? If it does please could you look up 1861 Census (if it is name indexed) for Robert Plumb born 1832 in Tilbury Essex. He was a fishmonger by trade. I would like to know the name of his wife and any children. His daughter, Emily, was born 1860/1 Kingston upon Thames, so she may be there. If 1861 census is not viable without further details, would it be possible to have a quick look in a Trade directory to see if he is listed? Thank you so very much, Yve

Hey Zoe, I just looked at the website for this place - it is in my old school! I wasn't aware this existed, I have lots of rellies on my mum's side from Kingston, which is where I grew up. Dear Zoe I have ancestors in Kingston by the names of Gatfield and Rackley. James Gatfield, wife Amelia and children Frances and Charles were there from 1881 to about 1885. Then I have Sarah Rackley and her family, sons William, George and James and wives and children. This is all after 1881, as before that they were in Windlesham/Bagshot area. Would be grateful if you find any information relating to those two names. Sarah Rackley died in 1895, but her sons were still in Kingston at the time of the 1901 census. Thanks Davina

Zoe, Sorry, only just seen your reply. Yes, another Tiffin girl! I left a long time ago, and as I don't live in Kingston anymore, hadn't even realised they'd moved the school into Rivermead's building until last year. I drove past for the first time in years, glanced past & saw the sign "North Kingston Centre". I had to ask my mum what had happened to Tiffins. Bet it was really weird walking those corridors again. Paul no luck on the Richmond look ups. The directories dont go back far enough. the only one I found covering richomnd was the 1889 Surrey and there was no Alfred James under the Stonemasons
