Hi Gemma, Could you please have a look for a Michael Rabbitt he served in the 1st Battalion 24th Foot (2nd Warwickshire). I think he was involved in the Indian Mutiny in 1857/8/9 and possibly was awarded the Indian Mutiny Medal. Thanks so much. Glen.

Hi Gemma please could you look for HENRY JONES for me. He was my gt gt grandfather , I don't know his birth place or year and can't find marriage. I only know through family that he died in India in the army, probably between 1871 and 1880, his wife was born in 1843 in London so he was probably born around that time, his daughter was born in 1871, on her marriage cert. it says that Henry was a private in the Royal Artillery. Thank you, regards, Helen

Hello Gemma, Many thanks for your kind offer. My great grandmother, Irene Anne McQueen was born in Landour, Bengal in 1894, I have her birth certificate and her parents marriage certificate from 1893, again Landour. Her parents were John Everett McQueen (born 1865, Ireland), and Anne Elizabeth Deane (born c1872). John was in the Army, but I don't know anything about Anne (why she was there, whether her father was in the Army etc, - his name was Alfred William Deane). Any information on either surname would be gratefully received. Best Wishes and thanks. Julie

Hi Gemma, I started a thread with this questin before noting your thread (sorry!). I wonder if you are able to shed any light for us: My great great grandfather was David Henry Middleton-Stewart. We have him told to us as born 31 Aug. 1849 at Wallsend, Northumberland, but I've never been able to find him in any searches in the UK. He married in 1881 at Thergammu, India, I'm told, to Elizabeth Janet O'Grady (born 1859, Co. Cork, dau of Lt. O'Grady of the Nizam's Arilllery, who was originally from Cork, Ire.. I know no more of the O'Gradys) . David Henry's ultimate profession was as Railway Station Master at Poona in India, where he died 1 Aug 1897. His father, an inventor & engineer amongst other things, is listed on a patent he registered, as being 'of Northumberland, and the East Indies'. This was in 1861. So I'm wondering if his birth may heve been registered in India in 1849? I am trying to find out more about his parents, specifically, (from birth & marriage certificates/registrations), as they've eluded any searches I've attempted on UK soil, except in people's memories and stories. I understand his father was D. Stewart. (without the Middleton , or a DT Stewart?), and family stories say his mother was Frances Middleton, but I've no verification, except that they're not in any Durham/North'lnd documents I've searched, regardless of the date DH M-S was educated at Ushaw Cllege, Durham for 1863-4 only, as was a younger brother, but his parents remained 'elusive' to me! I figure India Records may shed some light? Thanks in advance for any ideas or answers!

Hello Gemma How great to see this thread. I've been absent from GR for a while and this was a pleasant surprise. I'm trying to find out more about my great-great-grandfather Edward John Burgiss and his wife. He was married to a Mary Jane and she gave birth to my great-grandfather Frederick Davis Burgiss in Lucknow (Bengal Presidency) in 1864. Edward John was a gunner in the F Battery, C Brigade of the Royal Horse Artillery (RHA) at the time. Can you find their marriage, perhaps in Lucknow or elsewhere before 1858. Can you find out where Edward John Burgiss originally came from? I don't know if this is possible, maybe from military or death records? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for the offer, Best wishes Jane

Hi Gemma, Trust me to find you after I posted a thread asking for help, as someone is kindly helping me on this too, so I hope I'm not treading on anyones toes, but do appreciate any help on this as it's quite tricky. I'm trying to find my gt grandfather's birth record, but have reason to believe he may have been born in India, his name is Joseph Samuel Baker, born around 1861 - 1864, the census states birth address as SEA, Joseph's father I believe was William H Baker, believed to be a Gurkha Officer in India, (that's why I can't find him on the census for any year). Josephs's marriage certificate states his father as William H Baker, not William T Baker. William T Baker was a Captain at the time of Josephs' birth so I think William T Baker may be my gt gt gt grandfather, because his rank does not justify his age. I need all the help I can get on this one, so hope I'm not upsetting anyone because I'd asked for help prior to seeing your thread. Kind Regards Sandra
