Is it a bird? is it a plane? | Report | 17 Oct 2004 15:14 |
Hi, I am very willing to do lookups in my local library for anyone that needs help out there. At the bottom of this post I'll let you know when I'll next be there researching :) I can get hold of some of the following parish registers on film, Birdingbury, Bourton on Dunsmore, Brinklow, Bilton, Binley, Brownsover, Church Lawford, Churchover, Clifton on Dunsmore, Dunchurch, Frankton, Harborough Magna, Grandborough, Hillmorton, Leamington Hastings, Long Lawford, Morton, Monks Kirby, New Bilton, and Newbold on Avon, Ryton on Dunsmore, Stretton on Dunsmore, Willey, Willoughby, Wolfhamcote, Wolstan I can also access the following parish registers of churches in Rugby Holy Trinity, St. Andrews, St. John, St. Matthews, St Peters, and St Philip There is also films of the local newspapers. Rugby Advertiser from 1846 onwards. Rugby Observer 1911-1939 and 1991 onwards. They also have almanacks so I can look up addresses or people to get address and occupation. The Rugby almanack (which also covers areas like New Bilton etc.) is available between 1862 and 1963. The village directory is available between 1874 and 1952. Can get hold of the Rugby census returns and they also have lots of different oddments including places in Northants and Leicestershire, so ask and I'll see if they have what you want :) They also have Monumental Inscriptions. Need a church and a date range to go looking though. So let me know if you have any lookup requests and I'll see what I can do :) Will post all answers on this board so keep an eye on it :) Next lookup day :- Possibly Monday 1st November |

I had a quick hour in the library this evening just before it closed to start looking for some of the lookup requests. I've decided that as the board isn't particularly busy and that some people are having problems with messages and e-mail that I would post messages here with updates, if thats ok? Means you can also add extra questions if you have any! |

Gemma - I searched the 1901 census for Church Lawford but couldn't find any Brett's. I then decided to start looking for a possible christening for Alfred George in the parish records. I'd found that birth on FreeBMD in 1893, so decided to search around that date. First I tried the parish records for Church Lawford and searched for Brett Baptisms from about 1890 to 1945 (in case Alfred christened any children there). No luck I'm afraid :( I even tried looking at the marriages between 1887 and 1922 to try and find any Bretts, but with no luck either. There are about 2-3 churches who were doing baptisms in Rugby itself in the late 19th century so I decided to start going through these. The first church I looked at was Holy Trinity, and I searched the baptisms for any Brett's from November 1880 to 1925. I found only two Brett's 11th April 1897 Arthur Jeffrey Brett to George Alfred and Ellen Jane, living at 50 James Street, his occupation was Boysman? (hard to read) 23rd April 1902 Stanley Edward Brett to George Alfred and Ellen Jane, living at 11 Charlotte Street, his occupation was Butler I then decided to try the St Andrew's records as they are probably the oldest church in Rugby. The good news is, I found this :) 8th October 1893 Alfred George Brett to George Alfred and Ellen Jane, living 23 Chapel Street, his occupation was hard to read but possibly boysman again. So, it appears they were actually living in Rugby between 1893 and 1902 and so I will search the 1901 census for Rugby for the James Street and Charlotte Street returns :) Let me know if theres anything else you'd like as I have the machines booked for 3 hours tomorrow and 3 hours on Thursday :) |

Julie - I have started rooting around for your Cox's! So far I've checked Holy Trinity's baptisms from the 1880s up til 1945 with no luck. I've also tried St Andrew's between Jan 1905 and Dec 1907, but ran out of time so couldn't go any further. Tomorrow I will search a bit more in St. Andrew's baptisms and then try St. Matthews (I think its that one... not sure) where there are some baptisms for the same period just in case they are there. Unfortunately they don't have the GRO registers, so I can't use them to try and find Eva. Once I get an idea of which church they may have considered 'their local' I can start looking for burials. The only problem is so few had cemeteries that it's more likely she was buried at Rugby Cemetery. As I say I'll have another look around tomorrow and see what I cn root up :) |

Gemma - As promised the Brett family in 1901 :) Rugby, Parish of St Andrews RG 13/2916 p12 11 Charlotte Street George A. Brett, Head, Married, 33, Butler, Leicestershire Broughton Astley Ellen J. Brett, Wife, Married, 31, Warwickshire Rugby Alfred G. Brett, Son, 7, Warwickshire Rugby Arthur J. Brett, Son, 4, Warwickshire Rugby Alfred Hines?, Boarder, Widower, 31, Cook & Confectioner, Oxford Banbury Also found in the St Andrew's marriage registers Dec 26th 1892 Groom = George Alfred Brett, 24, Bachelor, Boysman, 64 James Street, father Edward Brett, Groom Bride = Ellen Jane Baker, 23, Spinster, Windmill Lane, father= Edwin Baker, Milkman Whilst searching for Coxs I checked the St Andrew's registers all the way up to December 1920 but didn't find a marriage for Alfred George Brett and Fanny Cox. Please let me know if theres any other research you'd like me to do :) I really have no problems as it gives me something to do! |

Julie - Some good news and some bad news I'm afraid. The good news is that I found some things on the parish records I think you might like. First I looked up Baptisms at New Bilton and found, 2nd June 1907 Charles Victor to Harry and Eva Cox, 13 Essex? Street, Rugby, Labourer 13th September 1908 Ronald Sidney to Harry and Eva Cox, 14 Jubilee Street N.B., Labourer 6th February 1910 Horace Leslie to Harry and Eva Cox, 14 Jubilee Street N.B., Driller I also found a list of confirmations. There was only one Cox on it, but because I don't know the names of their children I wrote it down just in case 29th March 1906 Horace Edward Cox I found some other Cox baptisms but a lot of them I was able to dismiss because I found that the father's were not son's of Harry's when I went looking for parish marriages. The ones I couldn't discount as being possibly related are as follows 13th Aug 1916 Edith Stella to Ernest Edmund & Edith Amy Cox, 24 Victoria Avenue, Electrician 11th Feb 1917 Dorothy Maud to Frederick Joseph and Maud Elizabeth Cox, 82 Campbell Street, Labourer 9th Feb 1919 Victor ___? to Ernest and Edith Cox, 24 Victoria Avenue, Fitter 10th Aug 1919 Marjory Alice to Frederick Joseph and Maud Elizabeth Cox, 82 Campbell Street, Labourer I stopped searching for baptisms in December 1920 as I felt that I'd made absolutey sure I'd found all of Harry and Eva's at St. Oswald's in New Bilton. I then went looking for marriages in New Bilton and the only Cox one I found that might be of interest is 12th Dec 1909 Groom = Bertie Hales, 19, Bachelor, Labourer, 14 Jubilee Street, father = Charles Hales, Labourer Bride = Hannah Mary Rose Cox, 17, Spinster, 14 Jubilee Street, father = Harry Cox, Labourer Searched all the way up to 1940 for marriages of Harry's children in New Bilton, but with no luck. Also tried St. Andrews between Jan 1905 and Dec 1920 with no luck. I was wondering if the family stayed in the Rugby area after 1910... There are no burials at St. Oswalds after 1907 and so its unlikely that Eva will be there. I have one last thing to try before I give up, so fingers crossed I might get something |

Julie - I played my last card this afternoon, I phoned the cemeteries people at the local council. The very nice gentleman suggested that as we were not sure of the date it might be better if you contacted the Warwickshire Record Office and see if they can help. They are very willing to try and search for her at the local cemeteries but you have to apply for a form and each search costs £20. If you do want to contact them, e-mail me and I'll send you the name and telephone number. These are the only suggestions I have to try and find Eva, 1) If someone had access to or is visiting the FRC, ask them if they could do a blanket search for deaths of Eva Cox. You never know she may have died whilst visiting relatives so you need to look at areas other than Rugby. 2) Get someone to see if they can find her in the National Burial Index. I'd say the right timeframe would be late 1909 (theres no guarantee she was alive for the christening of Horace) to about 1920 if the family story is correct. Let me know if theres anything else I can do to help :) If of course you track her down and she does die in Rugby, give me the date and I'll do a quick search to see if she turns up in the local papers. |

Just posting up todays results, in no particular order! Karen - I found the marriage you wanted but because its pre 1837 it doesn't have ages, occupations or parents on it! The only information it did have was when the Banns were read out and which parishes Samuel Noon and Ann Elson were from. Ann was from Brinklow but Samuel was from the parish of Clifton. Interestingly Samuel actually signed his name, which is unusual from this time period (most people signed with an X). I did print off a copy of the record (although its hard to read) and am very happy to send it on to you. If you're a full member just send me a private message with your e-mail address. If not, leave a message on this board asking me to contact you and I'll send you my e-mail address :) I didn't have much to do today at all so I also looked at the Clifton on Dunsmore parish records. The baptisms are horribly unreadable in the 18th century so no luck :( If you're wanting to find out what Samuel's occupation was, it might be worth finding the christenings of his children? Sometimes they have the father's occupation on them. |

Patricia- This is going to take a while to write, but I hope its of some help to you! I searched the burials in Brinklow between 1813 (when the burial registers start) all the way up to 1912. Feeling rather enthusiastic so jotted down anything that resembled Henley or Hendley :) 21st July 1830 Abraham Haley? Foleshill 24 19th June 1837 Sarah Henley childbed Brinklow 20yrs 27th August 1837 William Henley Brinklow 10week 1st January 1840 William Hensley? Patricia - Sorry computer is being a bit slow today so wanted to post that other stuff before it all got lost in cyber space! I was really short of things to do today so I had a look at marriages too. You've probably already done this but nevermind :) I looked between June 1824 and the end of 1900. I only noted Henley of Hendley ones this time. I found a Benjamin Henley marrying a Hannah Saunders in 1836 and a John Henley marrying a Phoebe Farn later in the same year. I found the marriages of Hannah Henley, Sarah Hendley, Benjamin Hendley, Ruth Hendley, Anne Phoebe Hendley and Emily Hendley, all who claim that their father is a boat builder called Benjamin Hendley (or Henley in Hannah's case). They were the only marriages I found. Let me know if you'd like the full details for any of them. If you've lost William by 1854, maybe he left the parish? I couldn't find any Henley's or Hendley's whose father was a William when they married and there were no William's dying who were of an age to have children. Let me know if theres anything else I can do. |

Julie - Did a little bit more on yours today to help narrow down the search for Eva Cox. I looked at the Rugby Alamanacks which list people and where they lived in particular years. In 1911 there was a new occupant at 14 Jubilee Street in New Bilton. I did however find a H. Cox, labourer living at 131 Lawford Road which is also in New Bilton. In 1912 I found a H. Cox, machinist living at 178 Lawford Road. In 1913 I couldn't find a H. Cox living in New Bilton. There was a H. Cox, Labourer in Rugby but when I looked back at the 1912 Almanack there was a H. Cox, Labourer living at the same address in Rugby so its unlikely to be your Harry :( I also had a little look for Hales but didn't find any B. Hales living in New Bilton or Rugby in 1911, 1912 or 1913 :( So maybe Harry and co, did move again? Or maybe he died. |

Thank you so much Sarah, Yes they were all children of canal boat builders, all descended from William. The marriage cert I have for his son is from Measham where he married and lived. The problem is Williams wife Sarah appears on the 1851 census in Brinklow aged 69 in domestic employment, shown as head but not shown as widow. We all understood this family while not being rich were comfortable from their boat businesses so why was she in domestic employment at 69? Benjamin who married Hannah and John who married Phoebe were both Williams sons, which seems odd!! Never mind just prattling to myself here. Incidentally Some of the sons kept the name Henley and some changed it to Hendley. What a jigsaw puzzle of a family! Actually next time you go please could you get the marriage details for me. Also maybe if you check the birth details of John Henley 14.12.1814 as he the John who married Phoebe Farn. |

Patricia - yeah, it does seem a little odd! Oh well, you'll eventually find something that breaks down that brickwall. As for the marriages, I wrote them all down :) I just didn't want to post them if you didn't want them as my computer was beginning to protest about being online! Unfortunately the pre 1837 ones don't have any info other than bride and grooms names and the date of the marriage :( 15th August 1836 Benjamin Henley m. Hannah Saunders 12th December 1836 John Henley m Phoebe Farn 12th July 1858 Groom = John Walter or Walker?, 19, Bachelor, Labourer, Brinklow, father = John Walter/Walker, shopkeeper Bride= Hannah Henley, 19, Spinster, Brinklow, Benjamin Henley, Boat Builder 27th December 1852 Groom = James Colledge?, 21, Bachelor, Labourer, Brinklow, father= John Jinks?, Sawyer or Lawyer (difficult to read) Bride= Sarah Hendley, 21, Spinster, Brinklow, father=Benjamin Hendley, Boat Builder 4th November 1867 Groom= Benjamin Hendley, 24, Bachelor, boat builder, Brinklow, father= Benjamin Hendley, Boat builder Bride= Elizabeth Cotton, 22, Spinster, Brinklow, father = Daniel Cotton, Grazier? 21st September 1874 Groom= George Collins, 23, Bachelor, Labourer, Brinklow, father= William Collins, Labourer Bride= Ruth Hendley, 25, Spinster, Brinklow, father= Benjamin Hendley, boat builder 25th December 1875 Groom= Allan Prit?, 21, Bachelor, Labourer, Brinklow, father= Stephen Prit?, Gardener Bride= Anne Phoebe Hendley, 18, Spinster, Brinklow, father = Benjamin Hendley, boat builder 25th December 1876 Groom= Jeremiah Watkins, 25, Bachelor, Labourer, Brinklow, father= James Watkins, Labourer Bride= Emily Hendley, 21, Spinster, Brinklow, father= Benjamin Hendley, boat builder Am very happy to look up John's baptism next time I go to the library. Is it possible they move to another parish and so William is buried there? The full list of registers I can get hold of is up at the top (updated it after today's visit) so just ask and I'll try and do it :) |
