Found this record in 1871 census: James Briggs Age: 2 months Estimated Birth Year: abt 1871 Relation: Son Of Paramour Gender: Male Where born: Barnsley, Yorkshire, England Civil Parish: Barnsley Ecclesiastical parish: St Mary Town: Barnsley County/Island: Yorkshire Country: England Registration district: Barnsley Sub-registration district: Barnsley Household schedule number: 272 Household Members: Name Age James Briggs 2 months Sarah A Briggs 26 George Splayfoot 27 Source Citation: Class: RG10; Piece: 4644; Folio: 110; Page: 48; GSU roll: 848409. His mother Sarah is shown as Married - and under the section normally reserved for wife/husband/son etc she shows as Paramour. George Splayford/Splayfoot is unmarried. George's occupation was originally 'no regular work' which has been deleted and replaced with 'scene shifter at theatre on census day'. They lived in the same house as a comedian so presume theatre was not far. Address was Harbro Terrace, Barnsley. Wish they were mine - there's a story in there!! Jill

Have you found Mr. Briggs yet?? I'd be looking for him too, lol. I notice the baby is described as 'son of paramour' and not 'son', so do you think the baby was her husband's? As you say, a story to be told there....bet they wouldn't have thought we would be discussing there love life after 136 years, lol. Kath. x

Hi Kath No - I've not found the father - I thought the baby must belong to George Splayford as she seems to be living with him. I just feel it's so sad he's not one of mine! Mind you, on my OH's tree in 1881 I found a woman staying with the family whose occupation was 'prostitute' - got me wondering how she paid her rent! LOL! Jill
