Thank you this sounds as if this is his but is there anyway I can be sure. I have been told he was a soldier which means he may have been more than a private. Would his home address help in this search?

Not sure what you mean by he was a soldier so would be more than a Private. Most soldiers were Privates unless they were promoted up the ladder to the next level. The main fighting troops were privates. The record found was for a Lieutenant so may be him. You may need to splash out the £3.50 to download it to see

His address at the time of joining the army will be on his sevice record, the problem is that most ww1 records were destroyed in a fire in ww2 so only a small chance that what you are looking for is their, to search for soldiers records for ww1 you need to go to kew or pay a researcher to look for you Officers or Soldiers whose regular or reserve service ended before 1921* The National Archives Ruskin Avenue Kew Richmond Surrey TW9 4DU Telephone 0208876 3444 www.nationalarchives.gov.uk Roy

Sorry Shirley, what I really mean is that someone on GR who is related to him by marriage told me that he was a regular soldier. Meaning she said, may have made it a career. Im new to this side of things so I havent a clue how to find these records but with the help of the kind people on here Im sure I will.

Do you have access to the WWI records on ancestry, they are pension records but many contain a huge amount of information on when and where a person served, injuries, medals and awards, addresses next of kin ect. They have just been updated and are well worth a look x

If your man was an officer, his records won't be on Ancestry.

Officers WW1 records are name searchable in the National Archives website. You need to search WO 339 and WO374 - just put the surname in. Unless your man was well to do, I think it's unlikely that he was an Officer - more likely to be 'other ranks'. That would mean searching the records which aren't on Ancestry yet WO363, at Kew, although if he was severely wounded as you say, then really he should be in the WO364 series on Ancestry. But then LOTS are missing - I know for a fact that my Grandad had an Army pension from WW1, but his records aren't there.
