Gary - the 1949 cert you have is a copy of the original - the copy was issued in 1949..... In the same vein I have an 1841 cert copy issued in 2007 Peter

Betty civil registration was from july 1837 in england/wales. Angela

HI Betty thanks for that info loks like i will have to try somthing else..just one thing though i have a birth certificate for his brother who was born in 1896 a year earlier but it was issued in 1949....

Gary This must be the ref you need Births Dec 1897 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marks Charles Hawking Chertsey 2a 43 Angela Chertsey is definitely in Surrey.

Hi Gary, I am from Scotland but as far as I know birth certificates were only issued later. The Births are listed in the Old Parish Register of the area where the person was born. It cost money to register childrens births in those days, many people didn't have any and didn't bother to register births as they didn't have to by law. Someone else who will know more about English certificates than me may help. But if a birth was rcorded then it would have to be in the parish register of the area. Betty

hi betty i really have no idea ....my cousin got a copy of the divorce papers thats how i know when his mother divorced her first husband........

HI My grandfather was born 18-9-1897 Adleston Surrey on the 1901 census his name is Charles Darch but the problem is he was born between a divorce and a second marriage during the year of the divorce ...his mother was Lotta Hawking she married William Edwin Marks Barnstaple Devon 24-12-1892 they divorced in 1897 the year of my grandfathers birth she married her second husband William Darch Alverstoke Hampshire Registry Office 16-2-1898...... So the question is do i apply for a birth certificate in the name of Marks or Darch ??????
