Thank you to all of you for your messages. I think the census returns you have given are the right ones. I was getting in a muddle but now I know about his first wife it does fall into place. Strange that he cant be found in 1841 or 1851 under either name. I have a message for Sheila with regards to the ship records. Do you know how I would be able to see the census returns for ships? Might be tricky as I have no clue as to which ship or where! Thanks again Jodie

Diane, That death was well spotted as I had not got around to checking Findmypast. Still can not find him on 1851 or 1841. Maureen

Hi Think Glitter is right with the census she found that lists the children Alice E Vain etc as I found a death on find my past in the September quarter of 1862 in Brighton Sussex for an Alice Elizabeth Vain volume 2b page 105, this registration doesn't appear on Ancestry. Looks like Rhoda was the second wife . Although it would seem that George is named as William in the 1861 census there may have been a mix up as the occupation for George in 1871 and William in 1861 are both labourers. Although Rhoda is listed as mother to Alice, George and Ellen it doesn't mean that she actually is possibly an assumption was made by the census taker as this is happened with my family when I have documentary evidence ie birth certificates to the contrary and the second wife is listed as mother on subsequent censuses

From 1861 Misc ships at sea or abroad are accounted for if the captain/master filled in the census forms and Royal Navy vessels if in port or abroad. Sheila

Hi I have mariners in my ancestry and if they were at sea at the time of the census being taken they didn't appear as the census is only a count of the people actually in the residence at the time. So you may not find George's father on any or on all of the censuses

Hi Jodie, A mariner is a seaman. Where do George and his father come from? Regards Vera

Jodie Report 4 Aug 2007 12:07

I am looking for a Joseph Vain/Vane who was a mariner. He appeared on his son Georges Marriage certificate and I am unsure how to trace him or even exactly what a 'mariner' was! The marriage cert. is dated 1863, when his son was 31 so I would assume he was born early 1800's. Any help with this is gratefully received Jodie
