Re the above, His family were wondering if he put his brothers name when he enlisted as he (Sam) was underage and I don't think the real Henry was killed in the war. (Although even if he was he's still this gentleman's uncle!). I've passed all the information on for them anyway for them to decide. Thankyou to everyone who has responded. It's very much appreciated.

Hate to put spanner in the works but Samuel had a brother Henry who was 3 years older(see census below in 1901) details found could be for him. So would still be your gentleman's uncle, or perhaps Samuel used his brother's name and identity Samuel Coates Age: 3 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1898 Relation: Son Father's Name: William Mother's Name: Mary Jane Gender: Male Where born: Monkwearmouth, Durham, England Civil Parish: Seaham Ecclesiastical parish: Seaham Christchurch Town: New Seaham County/Island: Durham Country: England Street address: Occupation: Condition as to marriage: Education: Employment status: View Image Registration district: Easington Sub-registration district: Dawdon ED, institution, or vessel: 21 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 218 Household Members: Name Age Arthur Coates 16 Elizabeth Ellen Coates 4 Mo Henry Coates 6 Margaret Coates 11 Mary Jane Coates 37 Mary Jane Coates 13 Samuel Coates 3 William Coates 43 William Coates 8 William Hutchinson 3 months

I just got off the phone from the gentleman and it looks like it could be the same person. Samuel was born at Sunderland but moved to Seaham very young. The different name could be because Samuel wasn't quite 18 when he enlisted, he was 3 months short. He was probably just turned 18 when he died. Thankyou so much for your help and Samuel's nephew passes on his thanks also. Best wishes Helen

Thanks Teresa. I wonder if that could be him? Perhaps listed under the wrong forename or a middle name. The date is about right as well as other details.

Hi I'll ask on the Great War Forum for you. Someone will have a copy of Soldiers died in the Great War and hopefully he's on there. Teresa www.ajbrown.eu(.)com/TynesideScottish/contents.htm looks like a good site about regiment

The information the man has is his name, year of birth, year of death and the regiment. This is all from family lore. Name: Samuel Coates Born: 1898 at Monkwearmouth, Sunderland, County Durham (now Tyne and Wear). Parents were William and Mary Jane Coates. Regiment : Tyneside and Scottish. He may have been a corperal or lance corperal as he has 2 stripes on his sleeve on a photo of him in uniform. He was apparently killed in the battle of the somme in 1916, this was corroberated by a soldier serving with him who told his nephew he was with Samuel when he was killed. (obviously this soldier is now dead). Thanks

I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I'm after free web sites to help me trace a death in 1916 in the battle of the Somme. I have tried Commonwealth war graves and couldn't find the chap, although I'm aware this probably isn't comprehensive. I'm a library assistant and this query is from an elderly gentleman who wants to know what happened to his uncle, his information is from his mother. Any help would be appreciated. Ta
