My grandmother and great grandfather are a bit of a mystery Emily Evans Ambrey as her marriage certificate states, was married to William George Wilkins on 13th November 1886 in Yorkley Gloucestershire. Emily was born in English Bicknor Gloucestershire in 1862 and William was born in Pawlett Somerset in 1858. Emily's father was James Ambrey as stated on Emily's marriage certifiate, he was born in English Bicknor. The Mystery is that both James and Emily were born Evans and the famiy changed their name to Ambrey between the 1861 and 1871 census. My father, Frank Wilkins, did tell me of a family dispute in which the name Evans was dropped and the name Ambrey was used. My father always believed that his mother's family name was Evans Ambrey but that doesn't seem to be the case. It would be very nice if anybody could shed some light on the Evans or Ambrey family and why the Evans family, or at least James part of the family changed their name. I have not been able to find a link between the Evans and Ambrey family. Regards Irene |
