Hi Tom it may be possbily that there is a link but until I can track down Mitchel Cotter who could be Mary's father I am not sure where to go from there as I cannot find any records of Mitchel anywhere?

Hi I did find Mitchel in a census in South Wales UK, his son Edward settled in Cardiff with his wife and children so I don't think Austrailia is in the picture really but many thanks for your help.

Hi Dee, The Irish are notoriously hard to trace unless you know all sotrs of things like parish and townland. I too have a Cotter from Cork, born about the same time as yours. She ended up in Liverpool with her husband. I have not yet found a way to go further back. Have you tried Rootschat? They have lots of knowledgeable people on that site who are willing to help and advise.

Hi to you all who replied to my message regarding Cotter. I know that my Great G/Mother was Margaret Louisa Cotter from Cardiff. Her father was Edward abt1858. I am stuck, I have been led to believe that his family came from around Cork. Can you advise me?
kind regards
Dee

I am researching my family and know my great grandmother was was a Mary Cotter married to William Tabb from Carrigaloe a small village near Cobh (formerly Queenstown), Cork about 1850's. is there a possibility it is the same family.

Hi Dee
You don't happen to know anything further apart from those names you submitted above do you? Or any of the parents names? Were you taking a stab as to where they came from?

I have a philip cotter born in Drogheda,Louth approx 1831, married a Catherine Gorry in Kells, Meath. They moved to Australia in 1855.
Their children were:
Nicholas
John
Margaret Annie (Ann)
Edward Michael
James Phillip
Rose Elizabeth
Mary Catherine

I know the names you listed are rather common names, but there could be a link. You never know.
But if I've been no help, I hope you find what your looking for.
Kind regards
Cait Cotter
