The Tremeer surname derives from the Cornish language and is not a highbred name as some Web sites are claiming. It does not mean settlement by a lake and the name originated long before the reign of Henry VII in Cornwall as one site has claimed. The name was originally de Tremeer meaning of the Tremeer. The Tremeer, the great settlement or land of the great family being refered to is a hill at the geographic centre of Cornwall. It lies in the village of Lanivet near Bodmin. It was held untill 1400 when the estate which also included the Tremore manor as divided between two female heirs. Alice one of the Co-heirs is the ancestoress of the Lords St. Leven who own St.Michaels Mount. The surname was first written down around the eleventh century and in Brittany where it was used as a personal name it use dates back to around 550 AD. First mentioned as St. Tremur or Tremeur who was a british prince son of the king of Bro Weroc who was murdered by Count Conamor also known as king Mark.
