I am Gillian Harwood, my grandmother was Evelyn Nickeas nee Field. My grandfather was John Thomas Nickeas son of Richard and Anna nee Riding. I believe he was born in Salford but am not sure of that, he also had a brother Gilbert Nickeas. Family history has it that the name came from Greece originally and they then moved to France and called themselves de Nickeas. Six brothers moved to England and settled in Herefordshire and dropped the de from the name. Eventually they moved up to the North West to Salford, Wigan and Southport. According to my Grandmother everyone with the surname can trace themselves back to one of the six brothers. |
