WOW ErikaH - that is a lot of extra info that I didn't have regarding Minnie Palmer and her family. Thank you so much for all that. I'll have to write it out and work it into my tree. You're amazing for doing that. The odd thing about all the Conuel family is their connection to Worksop / Elmton / Clowne area - we go most weeks to visit friends who live in Cresswell with Elmton and often drive through Elmton and always through Clowne lol.

I do know that Thomas Conuel (one of gran's younger brothers) was a sort of black sheep of the family and went to live in Keighley with a second family. Some of the more recent family lived there and I still have two cousins there.

Thank you Jane, I had no idea about that website and will certainly begin my research where you suggest

Try using this site. Lincstothepast. It has a lot of baptism, marriage records etc for Lincolnshire.

Once in the site If you type in Gainsborough baptisms and search for the years that covers John's birth. The ones with the picture of a book next to them are the ones you can look at. You want page 3 (found at the bottom of the page) and it is the last one Baptisms and burials 1784-1812.. Once in that book you need to start around image 150 which covers the years 1801-1802.

Just returned to Gr after an enforced (mainly illness) absence after five years - and WOW to re-find this post lol. It's now 11 years since I first posted about this and still no further LOL. Here's an update and any further help / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

JOHN CONUEL - from his army records (copies from National Archives) he says 1808 Gainsborough, Lincs but other places he says 1806, so I generally search 1800-1810.

We have been to Lincoln a few years ago and spent a long time going through all the records for Gainsborough from about 1800 to 1810. We were surprised to find no reference at all to the name Conuel (nor various spellings of if) :-(

I have now found John and his wife Catherine in all census records from 1851 up to their deaths. Still cannot find their marriage (maybe Dublin where she was from but doesn't seem to appear), tried Devonport where eldest son was born in early 1840's - still no joy.

My usual search places are GR, Family Search, Ancestry for older records. Anyone any suggestions please of where I might look next.

Thanks

Heather

Hi Tracy and Bruce

Thanks for the offer Tracy. I hope we can both get some info from your auntie - or at least find out where we need to go to.

Thanks for the info Bruce, I've tried the web site, but nothing seems relevant. There are actually two people on Ancestry searching re John, one is my sister and the other my cousin's daughter. We have all the census details - but he can't be found in the 1941 census as the Northumberland Fusiliers were in Gibraltar and Ireland around the early 1840's so the 1850 census is the first one with any details of the family. From there we can trace it mostly through to date with odd gaps admittedly eg his grandson John William Conuel (father James) born in 1855 married Minnie Burgess in 1914 and according to the marriage certificate, she had been married previously and her maiden name was Pearson - but other than the marriage we can find no trace of either of them afterwards and nothing of Minnie prior to this wedding!! I seem to think it gave her father as Edwin or Edward. Their homes were John living in Elmton (near Clowne, Derbys) and Minnie in Clowne.

I suppose we might solve these family mysteries one day :-) - maybe we ought to call it family mystery instead of family history as it's a lot of detective work isn't it?

Hi Heather if you find out please let me know too as My Great Grandfather was born in Gainsborough but in 1828 so a bit later.
I too have suffered from lack of information, although a cousin of mine has visited there and taken some photos and also a CD of businesses that he has bought for me and is sending me (I am in Australia)
Also there is a Gainborough web site that has a look up section (http://www.gainsboroughlincs.co.uk/)

There is a person on Ancestry.com that seems to have a match for John Conuel

There seems to be a match on the 1851 Census
Has

Hope that helps

Hi

Does anyone have access to the Gainsborough Parish Records to help me find out about my great great grandfather's parents? As far as we can make out the correct spelling of the name is CONUEL but with various census and other records, we have at least 12 variations of it, mainly Connel, but also Conewell, Conowell, Conell, Connell - the list goes on and on.

John Conuel was born in Gainsborough about 1806 but that's all I've found about his birth. I have details of his wife and children and I know he was in the 5th Foot Regiment (Northumberland Fusiliers) for 20 years between 1828 and 1848. He then came back to the Retford area and worked in farming, as did his family.

Failing anyone having immediate access, does anyone know where the records will be kept please?

I also have a copy of the will of a William Conuel dated 1800, but there seems to be no mention of wife/children just a George Conuel but no details of who he is.

I also know there are several Conuels mentioned on LDS in Gainsborough/Clarbough, but again, not John and so I cannot get them connected.

Any help on this section would be very much appreciated.
