Find Ancestors

Looking for Emily Vaus, born c1827, Albury, Surrey. Parents were William and Mary Vaus. I have quite a bit of information about her family, but wondering if Emily is on the 1861 census.

Thank you Maureen. She married my ancestor (she was the second wife) in Canada in 1871. She was a spinster.

Name has been spelled Vaus/Vaux and Vause.

PS Thank you Anita. Don't believe she was married prior to 1871.

Is there a chance she is listed as Emily Vans, please? (The name has been transcribed as this before.)

I can't see her in 61 or 51. I have looked through Albury in 51 and she isn't there. She was away from her family as a servant in 41, so presumably was away in 51. Do you know where she was in 51 as that might help?

Don't know if it's of any interest but the Surrey Advertiser carried an article on 2nd November 1867 about Alfred Harris Vaux, a Civil Engineer, who married Caroline Hollins 29th October. The bride's father was George Holbrook Hollins. The wedding took place in Croydon.

Linda, thank you very much for taking the time to look through Albury! She had 13 brothers and sisters (only two or three died young), so I'm not surprised to hear she wasn't living at home in 1841.

The family actually was in Shipley, Sussex from pre-1748 until c1820. Her father died in 1846 and her mother died in 1850. I have no idea where Emily was in 1851.

Paul, thank you very much for that information. We don't have any Alfred's in the family (that I know of), but he could be from my 4th cousin's side of the family. I will save your information for further reference. I had found the website a while ago (or one very similar), but after looking at it again, I certainly could refresh my memory/learn new things about the village!

1851 Census: Looking for Susanna(h) Vaus (my gggrandmother and Emily's sister). Susanna(h) was born in Albury, 1829. She married James Mumford in 1857 and arrived in Canada that year. (I believe I have her census return in 1841.) I am hoping she was living in Albury in 1851.

Maureen, thank you very much! Susannah had a sister named Maria; she was born "right after" Susannah, so the year fits. There was another sister, Caroline, who would have been born around 1825-1826 (don't have those notes in front of me). Thank you for finding these two. I'm thrilled to add them to my information.

I saw just checked FamilySearch and see Maria and Caroline listed on the 1881 census as Vaux. I believe their greatgrandfather's spelling was Vaux - perhaps they went back to the old spelling. (Or someone couldn't spell.) Thank you again for your help.

PS Would you know what St Marthas means? (Almost the last line of the census)
