Diane

Thankyou so much for that information.I can now sort out the rest of the tree for my mother.it took ages for the marriage certificate to turn up so that I could find out that William was Fredericks father. But I noted that Frederick Thomas isnt showing up on the cencus yet with family members. But he was born in 1842.
thanks

Hello All.

An update for you all.I am still waiting on the marriage certificate for henry and Elizabeth but I have received the marriage certificate for Henry's parents. Frederick Thomas Wilkens and Mary Ann Elizabeth James.
They were married on the 13th Dec 1865 in the parish of Marylebone,London,Middlesex

Mary Anns father was John James and he was a tailor.

Fredericks father was William?(writting hard to read on 1st name) Arnold Wilkens. He was also a tailor.

Im glad that I got this certificate because I thought Fredericks father was named Thomas so I have gone in the totally wrong direction.

SO you know what I am going to ask now dont you?lol Information on Fredericks father. So far I havenot found anything.
Thankyou
Dionne

You know what I am going to ask now dont you?lol. Trying to find William on the cencus now.

Henry was born 1872 not 1871 As per his navy records and the Birth ref i found for Mar qtr 1872 .

However this one looks a strong possibilty, census enumerators would spell a name how they thought it was spelt.and errors often occurred.
this does tie with that marriage where frederick is Wilkens

Hi Angela.
I can understand where you are coming from now.
Diane I was very interested in your message. Things looked very similar.I saw a henry E Wilkins aged 9 and he was born in 1871 so his age would have been correct when the cencus was done.Thomas was a hairdresser as listed and I think they did live in soho. It all adds up but I was worried about the spelling of the sirname as the wilkens you found was with an i rather then an e.
Do you think whoever wrote the record could have made a mistake and was it common in those days to call yourselves by your middle name?
Thankyou

You need to find the family together on a census.

1881 is completely free on www.familysearch.org

When you find the family, you will have the details of where and when each of them was born.............the search for a marriage will be easier once you have those details.

You do realise, I hope, that you can search for bmd info on the freebmd website???

Many of you kind members have been helping me gain information on my great grandmother Elizabeth Sutherland and great grandfather Henry Edward Wilkens. I am waiting to receive ther marriage certificate before I can go any further.
In the meantime I trying to find information on Henry's father. I only have a little information on him and I am hoping this is enough to make a start.
THOMAS WILKENS
married a lady called ELIZABETH.(dont know her sirname)
LIVED IN LONDON
Thomas was a BARBER.(this was confirmed from his sons naval records. It was noted that henry had a scar on his neck as a result of a hairdressers cut)

I was thinking that as HENRY was born in 1871 that his father would have been born about 20 years before. I looked on the cencus records between 1851-1852 but have not been able to find anything so far.
Any help would be great. Thankyou
Dionne
