Hello Helen
Ellen HANDLEY born 1861 and baptised 2 Feb 1862 at West Bridgford. She was the sister of my G,Grandfather Henry HANDLEY born 15 Dec 1845 also at West Bridgford. I have been given some information on her but not proven. She had a daughter Arabella Oldershaw HANDLEY (I think illegitimate) born 20 Dec 1879 in Nottingham. Arabella had a daughter Ellen Handley (I think also illegitimate) born 1897 in Chesterfield Derbyshire. On the 1901 census she is shown living with John & Ellen SMITH, as niece but she must be Ellen’s Granddaughter don’t you think. As a matter of interest the mother of Ellen 1861, Harriett HANDLEY (nee FLINT) was also born illegitimate, this I have proven, from her baptism and marriage records.
Hope this is of some help to you.
Jim

Good morning, Helen!
I wondered whether Ellen and/or Susan in the 1881 Handley household might really have been daughters-in-law (or -out-law) rather than daughters.
Susan was a Handley born; this is her in 1871:
Name: Susan Handley Age: 12 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1859 Relation: Servant Gender: Female Where born: Bridgford, Nottinghamshire, England Civil Parish: Basford Ecclesiastical parish: New Basford County/Island: Nottinghamshire Country: England Registration district: Basford Sub-registration district: Basford ED, institution, or vessel: 9 Household schedule number: 175
Household Members: Name Age Alfred Biddle 51 Elizabeth Biddle 54 Susan Handley 12
Oh, aargh. Finally found the family in 1871 by searching for Ruth by given name and details alone.
Name: Ruth Hundley Age: 6 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1865 Relation: Daughter Father's Name: John Mother's Name: Harriet Gender: Female Where born: West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire, England Civil Parish: West Bridgford Ecclesiastical parish: Lincoln County/Island: Nottinghamshire Country: England Registration district: Basford Sub-registration district: Carlton ED, institution, or vessel: 7 Household schedule number: 6
Household Members: Name Age Alice Hundley 4 Elen Hundley 10 Harriet Hundley 48 John Hundley 47 John Hundley 21 Joseph Hundley 17 Ruth Hundley 6 So yes, all three girls, Ruth, Ellen and Susan, were Handleys.
Just thought I'd add that, in case you're still looking!

Moving right along now ...
Oh aargh. Minnie was 4 in 1881, not blank as the transcription shows, which I'd interpreted as meaning "under 1". Here she is in 1901:
Name: Minnie Handley Age: 25 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1876 Relation: Head Gender: Female Where born: Edwalton, Nottinghamshire, England Civil Parish: West Bridgford Ecclesiastical parish: West Bridgford St Giles Town: West Bridgford County/Island: Nottinghamshire Country: England Registration district: Basford Sub-registration district: Carlton ED, institution, or vessel: 11 Household schedule number: 182
Household Members: Name Age Jennie Dean 26 Minnie Handley 25 Sarah Hensen 26 William Hensen 28 Cheeses.
So is this perchance her in 1891?
Name: Minnie A Smith Age: 15 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1876 Relation: Granddaughter Gender: Female Where born: Nottinghamshire, England Civil Parish: Radford Ecclesiastical parish: St Peter Town: Nottingham County/Island: Nottinghamshire Country: England Registration district: Nottingham Sub-registration district: Nottingham North West ED, institution, or vessel: 13
Household Members: Name Age Elizabeth Smith 76 Minnie A Smith 15
Perhaps the mothers of each of Ellen's two husbands each got a granddaughter to keep?
So ... anything New 2 U in all that??
No wait!!! AAAARGH.
Name: Minnie Goodhead Age: 15 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1876 Relation: Servant Gender: Female Where born: Edwalton, Nottinghamshire, England Civil Parish: West Bridgford Ecclesiastical parish: St Giles Town: West Bridgford County/Island: Nottinghamshire Country: England Registration district: Basford Sub-registration district: Carlton ED, institution, or vessel: 9a
Household Members: Name Age Benjm Goodhead 21 Eliza Goodhead 57 Minnie Goodhead 15
It doesn't say MINNIE GOODHEAD, it says MINNIE HANDLEY!!!
Damn Ancestry's eyes.
Now, if you knew all this I'm gonna hit you.
I don't think it's got us much closer to figuring out WHO she was, but at least we know WHERE she was!!

Hi Helen - got yr message - no, I'm just a nosey parker, but really good at finding people who are hiding in databases, and always desperate for something to do besides working. ;)
My Nottinghamshire forebears hail from Calverton, and are Coopers and Smiths and Fallowells but maybe not Cooper after all, I'm wondering this week ...
Now, you're confusing me.
1. trying to find Ellen Handley born 1862 Nottingham.
2. What i am looking for is info on a granddaughter her name is Minnie.born 1881
So Minnie ain't Ellen's granddaughter. And I can't find this Minnie at all. No Minnie Handleys born around 1881 Nottinghamshire.
So ... okay, finally found the right Ellen Handley, in 1881.
Name: Minnie Handley Relation: Granddaughter Gender: Female Where born: Plumtree, Nottinghamshire, England
Name: Ellen Handley Age: 19 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1862 Relation: Daughter Father's Name: John Gender: Female Where born: Bridford West, Nottinghamshire, England Civil Parish: West Bridgford County/Island: Nottinghamshire Country: England Street address: Bridgford West Occupation: Dom Servant Registration district: Basford Sub-registration district: Carlton ED, institution, or vessel: 8
Household Members: Name Age Alice Handley 14 Arabella Handley 1 Ellen Handley 19 John Handley 54 Minnie Handley Ruth Handley 17 Susan Handley 21 . Well danged if that doesn't look a lot like my 1891 Cooper household in Calverton. My grandmother Alice, a domestic servant, her parents, and her daughter Lilian born 1890, and ditto for one of Alice's sisters.
Our understanding was always that Lilian's middle name, Lewis, was the surname of the family where Alice was in service. Whether the "father" was head of the household or a son, don't know, nor do I know who they might have been. Lilian, Auntie Dud, was annoyingly born just before a census, and so her mum wasn't in service at the time of the census.
Ellen's sister Susan is also a domestic servant, widowed father John an agricultural labourer.
Do you know the story on the other granddaughter? --
Name: Arabella Handley Age: 1 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1880 Relation: Granddaughter Gender: Female Where born: Nottinghamshire, England
Did the girls each have a daughter, or did one girl have two daughters -- be that the question?
Not finding births, even with the unusual name Arabella. Could this be her, with the surname mistranscribed somewhere along the way?
Name: Arabella Spencer Hardy Year of Registration: 1879 Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun District: Mansfield County: Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire Volume: 7b Page: 72
Or was she in fact registered with a different surname from her mother's?
Minnie, unfortunately ... a couple of hundred of them registered in Basford in 1880-81, not to exagerate overly.
Is Oldershore a name? Not Oldershaw?
Aha.
1891:
Name: Arabella Oldershaw Hanley Age: 11 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1880 Relation: Granddaughter Gender: Female Where born: Nottinghamshire, England Civil Parish: St Mary Ecclesiastical parish: St Paul Town: Nottingham County/Island: Nottinghamshire Country: England Registration district: Nottingham Sub-registration district: Nottingham North East ED, institution, or vessel: 41
Household Members: Name Age Liln Calladine 25 Eliza Oldershaw 68 Henry Oldershaw 30 <<< Samuel Oldershaw 70 Arabella Oldershaw Hanley Now you see, these are things that you undoubtedly already know -- and they're the things you want to tell when you ask!
So is this her then?
Name: Arabella Oldershaw Year of Registration: 1880 Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar District: Nottingham County: Nottinghamshire Volume: 7b Page: 361
No Minnie Oldershaw registered before the 1881 census, though.
So Arabella was Ellen's daughter. And whose was Minnie?
Oops. Running out of space. Continued ...

Sorry this is my first time. I have the Handley's in my tree. What i am looking for is info on a granddaughter her name is Minnie.born 1881.trying to find out who she belong's to. if you want info on the Handley's will be glad to share it. thank you.

If you have some info ... share it!!!! It's a drag when one spends time finding info that someone already has, or looking for info that could have been found if one knew what is known!
And give an idea of what it is you're after -- parents' names, for instance?
