Find Ancestors

I have a cert that so far, has stumped everyone who's viewed it. If you have experience deciphering old script, then you may be able to help me.

I'm hoping to find 3/4 people who have the time and patience to work in a group from this thread. I think the only way to solve this problem will be to talk through what we are looking at.

Hi Sue,

The original script from 1838 must have been badly faded and someone has traced over it. If you look at "Formerly", you'll be able to see the original slightly above.

Whoever traced it, didn't form anything that represents propper letters. It's almost like he traced the general shape of the name.

Why not try ring Liverpool Registry Office / or the Records office and ask if they can check the original.

It shouldn't be a problem as you have an official copy.

Agree with P. Take a look at how the other letters on cert are formed. The P in Podd is the same. The stylised r in Sharp and Mary is different though. It ends on the decending line and rises to meet the following letter in Sharp and Mary. In maiden name it ends on the asending line and doesn't meet the following letter.

I've looked at the lower-case s in Cuicus (address) and registrar. I can't see a double s in her name.

The dg from Prodge is interesting though. The d isn't formed as strongly as the d's in Podd, but it could be. The g has no loop, but again it's possible.

If it is ss, what is the long descending line before the e ?

In 41, they have two children, Frances and William. Following through, Mary dies and Robert is a widower in 51. Birthplace Cumberland.

I've not struggled like this with reading a certificate

Has anyone noticed that there are two distinctively different lower-case r's.

There is the stylised r in Sharp and then look at the small r in Robert.

Take a second look at what I believed to be a stylised r following first letter P. Could it be an i and lazy r ?
