Am trying to track Edward and Elizabeth Shirley. On 1861 they were living Crucifix Lane, Bermondsey, Edward age 54, Elizabeth 53 and unmarried daughter Caroline 29, Elizabeth 13 and son John 9. I have not been able to find this family yet. I imagine Caroline married but I have found both Elizabeth (18) and John (14) as passengers on 'Greyhound' in 1865 emigrating to New Zealand. The parents Edward and Elizabeth are not on board so from this I am wondering if (a) the parents had died or (b) moved from Bermondsey. Could anyone find out at all ?

To find out if they died, you need to check freebmd........

Hi Reg - I have tried Freebmd but can't find them. Unfortunately I do not have ancestry or anyt other source. Thanks anyway.

OK, so they probably didn't die......or at least, not during the 10-year spell between censuses..........

Can we take it that you haven't found them in 1881?

Hi - yes that is the family on 1861. With Caroline of marriageable age I assumed (perhaps wrongly) that she would be married and therefore a different name, I knew Elizabeth and young John had gone to New Zealand in 1865 and must admit I didn't advance as far as 1881 (they would be in their 70's then) I hunted around in 1871 thinking that in their 60's they could still be about somewhere. Edward's place of birth has been different on 51 and 61 census - Oakley, Berkshire and Little London, Berkshire but Elizabeth was Bermondsey, London
