Howell John father of Thomas John (b Cwmavon abt 1

Thomas John married Cecelia Saunders (b Monmouthsire abt 1827) in St Woolas Parish Church, Monmouth in August 1849. Thomas' father is shown as Howell John - occupation butcher.
I have found Thomas John in several census forms (1851-1891) all showing he was born in Cwmavon Glamorgan. But I cannot find any other record of Howell John other than his son's marriage certificate. There are no addresses given on the 1849 marriage certificate. Can anybody help to find Howell John or suggest places to look?

Thanks so much for this. Obviously need to check on a few things but looks like it could be the right people. Why couldn't I find it? I've even got a copy of the Michaelston-super-Avon Parish Register and still couldn't find him/them!
