Jane Evelyn Winterton born 1887 Scotland, died before 1891. There is an old family story that she "drowned in Ireland". Does anyone have access to Irish death records? Her father was in the British Army - is there any registry of Overseas Army deaths? No record of the death in England or Scotland.
Thank you
xxxx Mick

Or committed her to an institution. It is possible she was born physically or mentallly retarded, as her mother later died of tertiary syphilis!

Does anyone know how I could start to look for a child who may have been institutionalized in the late 19th C? thanks xxxx Mick

Hi Mick,

How are you this fine hot morning?

I've just checked the overseas deaths records that glitter posted and your Jane doesn't appear.

So, you've never found her on census records?

I've just done a blanket search of patient/institution under name Winterton for England and Scotland............nothing!

It's very strange that her death wasn't registered. Her father was military, so by rights if she drowned outside her birth country, she should be on army deaths overseas and consulate deaths also.

So, no death on scotlandspeople ?

No, people have checked Scots ppl for me - say no record there. He was stationed in Jamaica and Malta, but that should show up on overseas deaths I guess. Thanks Mick

I'm a bit puzzled as to why you should think drowning in the UK might qualify as an "overseas death", but anyways, one can purchase certs (or cheaper still, the uncertified images of the rego) via:

Hi Mick, just googled www.interment.net clicked into Ireland Cemetery Records, then into Cork, only Cemetery in Cork recorded is The British Military Graveyard., clicked into it and scrolled down to W,s and saw Jane Evelyn Winterton died 13th June 1887, age 2 months.Father C.G.Winterton, 4th (Queens own Dragoon,s) Hussars, Paymaster Sgt. F. Dobbin Abode, Ballincollig.
There is an e-mail address of the person that transcribed the Deaths, if you e-mail her, she may tell you if there is a headstone on the babys grave. There is also an address for the people that are looking after the Cemetery and that have a key to the Cemerety.
