Thats the right one....
They married in Jan 1848 in Newcastle.
1851 they are in Plaistow Essex where son Robert is born Dec 1848 ( g grandfather ) by 1871 Ann is a widow and the family have moved back up North.
Robert had a son James Stephenson in 1882 South Shields who was my grandfather

Hi Anita,
I have tried hughwallis and came up with a few marriages but none seemed to fit, just found a new one on genuki in Newcastle which looks promising and have sent for a copy of marriage in parish records hoping it may give details of where they came from. Tried everything on census checks they just seem to have disappeared, unless they had both died before 1841 which would explain why Walter was living with Grandparents, thats if they were his grandparents

I have asked this question before about 18months ago, but I’m still no further forward so I thought I’d try again and see if anyone could come up with any idea’s.

My G G Grandfather was Walter Stephenson who, according to the 1851 census was born 1822 in Northumberland, he is missing from the 1861 although his wife is listed as married and a builders wife, by 1871 Annie is a widow. I have the marriage cert which states his father is a Robert Stephenson a builder.
The 1841 has Walter living in Jesmond , Newcastle with a Stephen and Catherine Stephenson who are aged 82 and 70 and both from Northumberland , in fact these two where both born in Co Durham.
They had a son Robert born 1798 in Whickham, Durham.
The only record I have found of a Walter Stephenson born in or around 1822 is in Gateshead to a Robert and Mary Stephenson. I have a copy of the bpt in the parish register but it does not give the mothers maiden name or where they were from. I have also not been able to find any trace of them in any census.

So do I assume that Robert born 1798 son of Stephen and Catherine is the father of Walter or do I need more evidence.
Would be grateful for any idea’s, it’s driving me mad !!!!
