Where would I find a log of his working life, when, where, what ships he worked on during his life. He was from Liverpool. Would I need to get intouch with shipping lines such as Cunard?

I have him in 1881 docker, 1891 mariner,1901 marine fireman. Had another look on National Archives and he ain't there that I can see. He was born in Killkenny Ireland and sometimes put Liverpool as place of birth.

National Archives - is free to look - you just pay £3.50 for the download.

Have you found him in all possible censuses?

Have you looked for him on National Archives documents on line?If he died in 1938 he wouldnt have been in the second world war.

On National archives royal navy records there are 6 pages full of James Longs - you need to go through them to see if any are the likely man from his date of birth.

I have had a few threads on about James Long 1862-1938 ships greaser being in a sea disaster, the ship caught fire and he was adrift for four days in an open boat. When? Ship name? A family member said today they think he was in the Merchant or Royal Navy in WW1.
Please help, need advice, any help at all.
