Hi Sue:

Yes I have also checked a couple of William Rooneys and William Jeffreys (his step-father's name) on the off chance this may have happened. I have also started to consider that Julia Carney may have been the childs Mother as she died the year Elizabeth married. But with so many options I would go bankrupt sending for every certificate. Also his full name is WILLIAM JAMES SHEPPARD, who, when he grew up under the name of William James Jeffreys called his son William James too so it must be a family name. I can only find two William James Sheppards born in Liverpool, one was born in September 1861 (too late) and the other was baptised in 1844 which would have made him only 14 at the time of this child's birth. Also in 1845 there is a death record in the same name.

Have you discounted the fact that he could have been registered in his mother's name, and his father not named on the cert?

There is this one.

Name: William George Rooney
Year of Registration: 1857
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: West Derby
County: Lancashire
Volume: 8b
Page: 247

Hi Sue:

Thanks for the look up. Unfortunately he is not my boy I have sent for no less than six birth records, (including that one) but no luck so far. The record office just write back and say the Mother's name is different, charge me three pounds for looking and i'm back to the beginning, which is why I am now trying to find something in the Baptismal Records. I'm losing hope of ever tracking this boy's father

Hi Sophie:

Thank you for your prompt reply to my query. William's Mother's maiden name was, I think Elizabeth Rooney she was born in Liverpool around 1838/41 to William and Sarah Rooney. I have found several families with that name but few check out. I have a 10 year old Elizabeth in 1851 working as the servant but in 1861 the only girl who matches is a 24 year old living with a 2 year old William Sheppard and lodger Julia Carney. she describes herself as a widow. She later married and the child took her husbands name but I am searching for his real father. I believe like her sister Sarah she may have baptised the child in Our Lady's Eldon Street. Both girls married in St. Peters.

I hope this is not too confusing. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Does anyone on the list frequent the Liverpool Record Office and access the Catholic Parish records. I am hoping someone will be able to check the baptismal records for Our Ladys Catholic Church in Eldon Street Liverpool. I am searching for WILLIAM SHEPPARD (any spelling) born 1858/9 in Liverpool.I cannot find any birth records for this boy who's mother is probably Elizabeth Rooney. Any help is appreciated.
