Before I go and spend money I would just like someone to confirm. I want to find ALL of the children that William Fredrick Henery Bell and Sarah Barrass had together. I know two of them but I am struggling to find their first born who died at the age of 7 with meningitis. If I order their marriage certificate could this lead me to the birth certificate of the first born?

it would give you a time frame -although the date in the index ( the QTR ) tells you that.

where and when did they marry?

They married in 1912 in south shields

The first born would have been between 1912 to 1915 as my great grandad was in the war between 1915 and 1918. The 2nd child was born in 1920. All were born in south shields, its my nans last wish for me to find this first born so its really important for me to get this information

Hi Melanie

What year and what place are you asking about ?

Certificates vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. But I would think it unlikely that a marriage certificate would be able to tell you anything except the bride and grooms address and occupation, and the names of their fathers and their occupation.

Even if the child was born before the marriage, there would not seem tobe any place to mention this on a marriage cert.

In Australia, death certificates mostly list all living children (sometimes ages) and how many children pre=deceased, but not on UK ones.

I believe the first born was possibly called William to. He died before my grandad was born in 1922. I believe the first born was born in 1912 to 1915. He was born in south shields but I really dont know any more than that. He was the son of William Fredrick Henry and Sarah Barrass who married in south shields. I know their first born died at the age of seven.

I dont think it is Alexander bell as that would make him 3 when he died, my nan seems adamant he was seven. I dont recognise C Barrass, his mother was S Barrass

His name was Alexander C Bell.

I've had contact with South Shields Register Office and if you provide them with the name of the child's parents - and it matches those of Alexander C Bell then they'll send you the certificate.
If it doesn't match - they'll return your cheque
Good luck

Melanie, check the census records for the approx. date of births and the names of the children. Then with that information, you can go to the BMD Index to look up the records.

I think its almost 100% that Alexander is one of your missing children. I'd personally go for the death certificate, rather than the birth, but then I guess its personal choice.

Good luck x
