It was very common to knowingly give false information. The registrar took everything on trust. My own grandmother made up a fathers name on her marriage cert as she was illigitimate. In each instance I have come across the father was always stated as 'deceased'. It was usually done to save face with the new in laws rather than admit you didn't know who he was.

Plenty of people lied on marriage certificates, often making up a fathers name in order to cover up their illegitamacy. Also, ages were frequently fibbed about. It didn't make the marriage illegal or invalidate it in any way.

hi there,

was wondering if anybody knows the law about marriage certs?

if so:- i have come across a marriage cert where someone has "knowingly" given wrong info - gave the wrong name and claimed the father to be deceased - does this make the marriage illegal? is it not a "contract of marriage"? so any false info makes it null and void surely?

any help or pointers would be great.
