You can search England & Wales birth, marriage and death registrations at www.freebmd.org.uk (between 1837 and c1915).
As John Brown isn't the most unusual of names, it might be wise to buy the marriage cert to find out his father's name and occupation. This will hopefully allow you to trace him on the census prior to his marriage and find out more precisely where he was born. You can buy the cert at www.gro.gov.uk for £7 using the GRO index reference above (Vol 4b Page 533).

Thanks Glenys it is definately him on both accounts by the names of his children and I also knew he lived on Heddon Common.I think I have found his death certificate in 1931, Jan/Feb/Mar Hexham 10b 545 but I am struggling to find a record of his birth in 1843 and 1844.
As I am a novice, I'm not too sure how to trace his marriage certificate as I have no idea what year he married.
As I mentioned above, very little is known about his early years apart from he came from the Norfolk area. I have no idea whether he had any brothers or sisters etc but would love to find out more about him.
Once again thank you for your help.
regards Neil

I am trying to find any information about my great grandfather john Thomas Brown..All I know about him is that he was born in the Norfolk area c.1844. Kings Lynn and Burnham are names of areas that have cropped up. He married Mary Ann Crow also from the Norfolk area and then moved North. He lived in the Jarrow area of Tyneside and then moved to Heddon on the wall in Northumberland. He was quite a character by all accounts and was known locally as "Norfolk Johnny". He died c.1931 aged 87. He had quite a large family, at least 12 children, two were born in the Norfolk area and the rest in the North East. My grandmother, Annie Maria Brown was one of his daughters born in 1887.
