Thanks for explaining this Pete, being quite new to this I wasn't aware there were separate records for those that died overseas that you could order from GRO - thanks for explaining this. I will go and do it now...thanks!!

Thanks also to Joanna for sending me the details.

Tracey,

you are no doubt familiar with the GRO indexes for BMD in England and Wales, such as those indexed on FreeBMD and other sites.

There are some additional indexes which exist that cover other events such as deaths at sea, service births marriages and deaths abroad etc. War Deaths (Army -other ranks) 1939-1948 covers the records you need.

A couple of the subscription website have the indexes online and from the index reference details it is possible to order the relevant certificate from the GRO.

I use to Familyrelatives website, but I think that Findmypast also has them.

Hasn't Joanna given you the details you need above? The service number reconciles with the details on the CWGC website for John K BURRY buried in Libya.

You should be able to order a copy of his death cert from the GRO if you quote the index title, Name, Year, Volume and page.

Carrie

I note that on numerous occasions you have advised enquirers that it is not normally possible to obtain a death certificate for war deaths. On several of these occasions I have had to point out that that is not the case. In every case I have ever dealt with it has been possible to obtain a certificate, although I accept that in life there are always exceptions to every rule and you may have come across one of these.

If a serviceman dies overseas it is possible to get a death certificate for them? I have a John Burry died 22/11/1941 in Libya and would love to be able to have a death certificate to complete my collection of siblings. Anybody know if its possible to get one at all?
