He is married on the 1861 census. First child was born in 1855.

He married Ann DRAPER.

Children were:

William, John, George, Thomas, Rose, John Henry.

So I know quite a bit, just not who his parents were.

No I don't have his marriage certificate, I don't know where they got married apart from it was probably somewhere in Leicestershire. I don't know when either.

Ok.

His name is William STAPLES.

On the 1841 census he's 10 and living with a group of unrelated people - so I don't know who his parents are.
Birth place given - Leicestershire, England. Census taken in the parish of Kegworth.
Registration district: Shardlow. Sub reg district: Castle Donnington.

1861, shows him as born in East Leake, Leicestershire. Census taken parish of Hugglescote, Leicestershire.

1871, shows him as born in Leek, Notts. Census taken in the parish of Whitwick, town of Coalville, Leicestershire.

I know who his wife and children were, but I need to find his birth, so I can find his parents.

John, you can't get a GRO reference number for events prior to 1837!

Mary, do you have him on a census after 1841? This should tell you where/which parish he was born.

Try freebmd.com as well but I guess it'll be the parish records or reference libraries for the GRO ref number.

I have a birth I'd like to find.

But it's circa 1830.

So am I correct in assuming I need to go to Parish records?

I only know the county, so how on earth do I find which parish I'd need?

Can someone give me a few pointers?
