Thank you Minnie, I was having trouble trying to go further back than 1881 (which is the correct person.) since everywhere I have looked comes up with not known. Obviously as a cow hand the family moved around a bit. Do you know if there is a way I could locate the farm he was at?

If you have a person of this name in your tree then there is a connection, his daughter Mabel is my GGrandmother, and was left to bring up 8 children on her own, after my GGrandfather died (Walter Benjamin Brett). One of their children is named Walter Charles Laban Brett, the Laban is often spelt Labon.

Any help greatly appreciated as we appear to have come to a dead end here, and there are rumours that we may be related to the poet Shelley...but I'm taking that with a pinch of salt, my grandfather could spin a yarn when given the chance!
