The Scottish homeland area of the clan Gunn is around the top righthand corner of Scotland, i.e. Caithness. I think there is a castle there that is a 'seat' of the clan. Also there was a very famous Scottish poet, Neil Gunn, who wrote a lot about the sea and silvery herrings.
Not really surprising that there are Irish links, there are many links with Irish families among Scots. Often this can be because of fishing.

hey if you look ....you have Ann's maiden name as mum in law is living with them in 1861

That's my Nat Gunn Glenys....but as you can see - Est. yr of birth is 1808/9, which matches to the military record i have of him. I find no birth records for him in 1808/9.

Have just looked on IGI and found a Nathaniel GUNN but born 1814 and not 1808 - maybe he lied about his age throughout his life??? It matches as the IGI says he married in 1838 in Fermoy, Cork as did my Nathaniel GUNN.

My gt gt gt grandfather's name was Nathaniel Gunn. His military records (93rd Foot Regiment) and subsequent census records show that he was born in Bower, Caithness circa 1808, however i haven't been able to confirm this.

Any help as to this or his parents/siblings etc would be appreciated.
