Hi Heather

Yes, I just got his death cert through today. The informant wasn't Hanorah as I'd hoped. It was his sister Lydia (Davis).

I think Hanorah states being born in Shoreditch rather than Ireland, although her parents could well have been from Ireland as it is an Irish name, as you say.

To Glitter Baby -

Thanks for that but I already have that info - this is his family (father, siblings etc). I couldn't work out if that grandson Joseph was 2 or 12 yrs old. It's not that clear. But anyway, it's not the Joseph I'm looking for as he'd have been about 42yrs and listed as "son".

I think I shall just have to accept that he's not on the 1891.

Thanks for all your help looking.

Youd think that the wifes name would be an easy search. Its an Irish name isnt it - wonder if they could be in Ireland??? Did you get his death cert?

Heather - sorry, forgot to answer your question about any kids. Well, I have no idea if he had any children with Hanorah as I only have them together as a couple on the 1881 Census (no kids) - lost on the 1891 - then he died in 1900. I can't find Hanorah on the 1901 either so can't tell if she had any children with her at that time.

I have found a birth record today of a Joseph Thomas Priestley born 1882 St Olave Southwark (which is the parish they were living in) - I was thinking of ordering this cert to see if he happens to be their child.

I've checked the 1901 census for any Joseph (Thomas) Priestley's bc 1882 but can't find him either.

Seem to be going round and round in circles with this lot LOL!

Hi Carrie

Yes, I already spotted the Pistey family (gave me a laugh that did) but I don't think that is him because he wasn't born in Leatherhead and he definitely wasn't a blacksmith. His family were mostly hawkers, sawdust dealers and the like, no professional trade as such and I doubt he'd have gone from being a long-term dancer to a blacksmith to a market porter.

I believe he must have given up the clog dancing due to his ill health (such an energetic occupation isn't ideal when you have chronic bronchitis).

Thanks for looking, anyway.

Heather - yes, I was so excited when I found my little clog dancer in the tree!! I dance also and he's the first person I found on my tree that I could point to and say "I must have inherited my talent from Grt Grt grand uncle Joe!" Well, you never know!

Oh how lovely, a professional clog dancer. Beats all the ag labs and dock labourers, doesnt it.

I wonder if he were in another part of the country at a music hall and staying in lodgings?

Athena, are there any kids to trace?

He may have just missed the census. Can you give the 1881 reference as it is a common name.

Re Joseph Priestley b1849

Hi - it's not often I ask for help with census searches but this particular one has stumped me for ages now so thought I would post it on here to see if anyone else might spot something I have overlooked.

I'm searching for the following person on the 1891 Census only (I have him on all the others):

Joseph (or Joe) Priestly/Priestley (spelling varies)
Born: 1849 Bermondsey, Southwark

In 1871 his occupation was "Clog Dancer in Music Hall" - still in Bermondsey, living at home with his parents.

In 1881 his occupation was still "Clog Dancer" but he was living with a woman named Hanorah (as his wife although no marriage entry found) at 3 Mina Ct, Southwark. He is listed as "Joe" this time.

In 1900 he died. Address was 25 Chapel Place, Bermondsey and occupation had changed to Fruit Market Porter (but it's definitely same chap as his sister was informant).

So, it looks as though he remained in Bermondsey all his life but I cannot find him on the 1891 despite searching on different name variations and without using a birth year etc. Have even searched using Hanorah's details but no luck.

Anyone up for a challenge? Any help would be really appreciated!

Many thanks - Athena
