Thanks Linda & Christine.
There are two William Spalton's b Bottesford - they are cousins. The one who married Harriett was 1858 - son of William and Elizabeth, the other is my ggrandfather, b 1859 to Thomas and Elizabeth. He married Catherine Robinson on 7 8 1882 (he is the butcher).

The Spaltons always seem to have a William and a Thomas just to confuse me, not to mention Thomas 1777 who married Two Olivia's and Elizabeth, the sister of the second one. He also had three daughters named Olivia....
am off to bed - it's night in New Zealand.

Rebecca, Sarah Ann and Emma are all registered as Goling so that ties in.

Unfortunately there is no evidence that this is Thomas 1877. IIf for no other reaso the Spalton christian names are passed down, and there are no John nor Abigail. He was a farmer in Easthorpe Bottesford and a churchwarden at some time as well. The family grave is immediately beside the side door of thechurch, so he presumably had some standing in the community. There are Spaltons in Derbyshire but I can't find a link. Part of the family moved to Orston, Notts, the others went to London. Olivia Kemp died 1921, He then married Elizabeth Dolby/Dalby in Sept 1822 - she died in childbirth in April 23, her dau Olivia died 1829. Next Thomas married Elizabeth's sister Olivia in January 1824 and they had 6 children including two Olivia's. She outlived him (he d 1843, she 1874). Interestingly both Dolby marriages were in different London churches - but it is his signature on both parish records.

Nice sunny afternoon in Auckland - now to dig holes and plant the plants we bought this morning.

Thanks again

Peter
