Hi,
Please can anyone help with the following.
On the 1851 i have Alexander White bc 1803 Manchester, he is a widower living with his 4 children, William, Thomas, George and Alexander. he is occupied as a bootcloser. William,(son) was bc 1838, but i can't find them on the 1841 census. I know from Alexanders birth cert, that the mothers/wifes name was Mary.
I know White is a very common name, but any help would be appreciated
Thank you in advance
Jean

Hi Jean,

Did the address on the 1843 (or so) birth certificate for Alexander have the same address as the 1851 census result?

OK, so this is a weird one!

I entered White, birth 1840 +/- 10 years, and came up with this one

Look at Allcock's occupation, and the birth years for Thomas and William!

1841 Census

Name: Thomas White
Age: 1
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1840
Gender: Male

Civil Parish: Manchester
Hundred: Salford
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England

Street address:

Occupation: View Image

Registration district: Manchester
Sub-registration district: Market Street
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Alice White 16 b.ca 1825
Allcock White 35 b. ca 1806, Boot Closer
Ann White 25 b.ca 1816
Charles White 7 b.ca 1834
Thomas White 1
William White 3 b.ca 1838

Address:- Back Thomas Street, Market Street, Manchester

NONE are born "in county", ie none were born in Lancashire

The family Sylvia found must surely be the right one. Why is wife called Ann on census but Mary on Alex's birt cert? Maybe she was called Mary Ann or maybe Ann died and he remarried Mary. Or maybe you made a mistake and she was called Ann all the time!

Hi everyone,
Thank you so much for your help.
Sylvia, the address on Alexander's birth cert is back Thomas Street, same as for Allcock White, and please forgive me, the name of Alexander's mother was Ann, not Mary as i said (i was looking at the wrong page in my book) :-)
Thanks again folks, you've ben most helpul

I had to come back and let you know, that besides the info you found for me you also gave me the maiden name of Ann. I had Alexanders birth cert, but the maiden name was illegible, and i couldn't make out the name clearly, but on looking at the 1841 image, i see a Mary Birks,(Ann's sister?) this is definitely the right family.
Thank you so much again
Jean

Jean,

you are very welcome!!

I have been trying to determine how Alexander could be heard as Allcock though!!

I mean .... it isn't a mistranscription, that is what it does say on the census image!

Maybe the census taker didn't wash his ears out that morning!!
