I am tracing the Cathrine name (my wife's maiden name) and I have gone back to Chatham, Kent around 1815. Whilst researching I have come across a large number of Cathrines in the Durham area and wonder if there is a link.

On my side, Joseph Cathrine was born in 1815, the son of a shipwright at the Chatham Dockyard. He joined the Marines at the age of 11 as a drummer boy and later became a soldier in the 45th Regiment of Foot. He had at least one brother Richard who was a sailor and was listed aboard HMS Daphne and HMS Wellesley. The latter became a training ship in the North East of England (not sure where).

Around the turn of the century three families of Cathrine emigrated to the Quebec area of Canada on the same ship - at least one of them from the Durham area and one from Surrey area. The coincidence is teasing!

If anyone has any information that would link the Chatham families with the Durham families I would be grateful.
