I would contact the Bristol Records Office. I think they would hold the admission register for the orphanage and know the name of the school nearest to the orphanage. Maybe hold the school registers too.

Thanks Pete, I can't find out how or why he got there though, I've been trying to find his parents but am stumped, I'm wondering if he was abandoned when he was born so nobody actually knows what happened to him, if so I wonder where he was for the first years of his life and with whom

He is listed in the 1871 census in the orphanage in Gloucestershire. The orphange is listed as being in Clifton. Perhaps there are admission records archives somewhere which will tell you a little of how he came to be there.

Hi
My mum's mother died when mum was about 5 and she doesn't know where she comes from as her dad re-married and lost touch, I've been looking for about a year and a half now so I can give her some info on her roots, I'm not doing too bad apart from I am really stumped regarding my g g Grandfather, Samuel William Hearnden born 1857 Boston USA, but was listed as in a Gloucester orphanage in the 1880 census, a few very kind people on GR looked up in USA for any of his family details, but on checking these I've found that these weren't the ones, as the samuels listed are still in america past 1880, I dont have acces to a credit card to try and source samuels birth certificate, so do you think that means I wont ever be able to find out about him, and why he was abandoned as such.

Kind regards
Siobhan
