To narrow down the possibilities:

the boys are all at home in Aston in 1871, but some say born in Bampton rather than Aston.

These are the only Cook men (aside from a Christopher, not sure where he fits) born in either Bampton or Aston according to the 1881 and 1871 census returns.

They are all to be found in Oxon/Berks in 1881 (William still at home). William and James are not immediately obvious in 1891 but if James is the man listed as born "Hampton" living in Aston in 1901 with his wife Elizabeth then this might narrow the possibilities to post 1901 for James and Edwin (presumably travelling with families) or post 1891 for William.

Sorry, not him. He was living with his parents, John and Mary, in 1901.

PS Did not check various spellings of Cook.

There is a James Cook in Winnipeg District in 1906, aged 43. Immigrated 1886, born England.

PS Almost all of my ancestors' birthdates are off by one/two years on the census.
