Find Ancestors

Hi could anyone help me find the parents of Thomas Meech born 1840 in Dorset.The exact place in Dorset varies from census to census but always listed as Dorset.His wifes name was Mary maiden name unknown she was born around 1841 in South Petherton,Somerset.They had 4 children Annie 1861,Albert 1873,Escort 1881,Florence 1885.
Would really appreciate any details on Thomas Meechs parents of any siblings he may have had.

Could you let us know which census you have found him on & the variants of spelling for the name MEECH you've come across?

I saw the Thomas Meech on the 1891 and the 1901 census,wife Mary.Birthplaces listed as Southwark Dorset-i thought Southwark was in London so thought this an error.Also Laymore Dorset other birthplace.
The surname always been spelt Meech up to this point but i know their is variations in the Meech surname from family to family.

I found the 1891 & 1901 census ( agree there must be a transcription error on the latter) I 've just found them on 1881 where it records him being born in Somerset??

I'm trying to trace him on the 1871...... to see if there is any other difference there too.....

It may need you to purchase a birth cert for on of the children say Escort F S MEECH to find mothers maiden name then trace a marriage cert for the pair so as to obtain a father for Thomas to go by.....

Which one would you advise me to go on Somerset or Dorset?Know alot of errors on census but seems bizarre for different counties to be given.
Seems like you're right and i am going to need birth certs for Escort and then the marriage certs for Thomas.Have got another thread on Jepson tonight as well these 2 are my stumbling blocks at mo.

I think you'd be wise to get the certs really before we start putting 1 + 1 together & making 3 ... lol

Thanks Debi going to take a look at the 1851 census record.Also didnt know their was a son Thomas.I.Meech as mentioned on the 1871 census.Appreciate all your help.

Places change to different counties over the years and census districts sometimes aren't in the same county every time.

Parents will give one place of birth, but when people fill in thier own census details, they put where they think they were born.

Some people don't know where they were born so put down where they remember living.

At times they put where they live then in case they are removed from the parish if they need relief.
