Many thanks for all the info.

I haven't been doing this for too long and all tips are very much appreciated (I never would have thought to ring them up!).

I have managed to find a marriage between William H Collinge and Mary A Henry in Chorlton in 1891. So I have all this information, why can I not find them on the 1901 census?

If you don't mind, have you an answer to the following too:-

1. Where can I find deaths registered in Manchester? Lancashire BMD deaths doesn't include Manchester and I have tried to find records on Ancestry, but to no avail.

2. I have traced my great grandfather on my mums side. He was born in Ireland (thats all the census says). He was a Police Detective in Manchester. How can I find out what part of Ireland he was from, would it be a trip to the library?

Sorry, I could go on and on (I do at the best of times!).

Regards

Lisa

Lisa

I once got a birth cert that looked like the vicar/registra was drunk!
I coudnt read one word!

You could phone the reg office and ask them to look at the original for you. With luck you could get a friendly voice as i did.

Give them these details...
Sarah Elizabeth Collinge
Year of Registration: 1896
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Manchester (1837-1924)
County: Lancashire
Volume: 8d
Page: 198

Good luck

Geraldine.

Then you have these two births?

William Henry Collinge
Year of Registration: 1872
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Manchester (1837-1924)
County: Lancashire
Volume: 8d
Page: 396

William Henry Collinge
Year of Registration: 1868
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Chorlton
County: Lancashire
Volume: 8c
Page: 644

So maybe the above marriage is not yours?

Thanks for looking, I am having the same problem! It would make life a lot easier if they wrote clearly on the certificates!

The only information I have is from Sarah's birth certificate.

The problem is I can't make out her mothers maiden name properly, I think is says Henry. Her father was an Iron Moulder.

The address where she was born is 142 Wolderns Strand (what I can make out) in the sub-district of Ancoats.

Sarah married George Finnigan in July 1916 at the age of 20 in Manchester.

Would you know any further details on the parents?
Age? Where born? or perhaps fathers occupation? Mothers maiden name?

Unable to see them at present with the above info

Can anybody please help me find my great grandmother in the 1901 census. Her name was Sarah Elizabeth Collinge, she was born in Manchester on 18 June 1896. Her fathers name was William Henry Collinge, her mothers name was Mary Alice Collinge.

I have a copy of her birth certificate, so I know the above information is correct, but I just can't find them in the census.

Help very much appreicated.
