Hello, I'm looking for any records of Hugh David MacKay born Edinburgh 1896 relating to his death in the Battle of Gallipoli. I have tried various records including Ancestry and some military records, the unfortunate thing is that I do not know any details of his service career ie. what regiment he joined or his army (?) number.
Can anyone please help????

Just looked at cwgc

Several with the name of Hugh but have no idea which is the right one.

Are his parents Hugh and Margaret?

Hi Lfw, I've got parents and his ancestry but its really his death that I am trying to find, and yes I've checked the graves commission but a brick wall.

Stupid question really but have you tried ScotlandsPeople for a death cert.

I got one from 1917 which only recorded his death as in France but it did give me his regiment and service number

Further to the details posted last night, you may be unaware that there are GRO indexes of those who died in WW1.

It can be searched online on the pay to view website Familyrelatives.com

The relevant index is GRO Index to War Deaths 1914-1921 Army (Other ranks)

The entry for Hugh Mackay (service number 3211) reads:

Name. MACKAY Hugh
Rank. Pte
Number 3211
Unit. R. Scots
Year 1915
Volume. I. 6 (Letter I not No 1)
Page 65

With that information you should be able to order a copy of his death certificate from the GRO

Again I wish to convey my heart felt thanks to you all for looking up Hugh, it is most gratifying to know that there are people like you that help and can see other ways to check.
We have even been able to "place" a flower on his name and a message to him this can be done on "findagrave" which is a very good website.

Once again thanks

Ian (A VERY HAPPY JOCK)
