Find Ancestors

I have Burke's Peerage and Kelly's Landed & Titled Gentry (1961) and will do lookups. Also Dictionary of National Biography (for famous as opposed to just highborn people). Please give as much info as possible.

Burke's Peerage only contains titled families, but gives complete geneaology. Kelly only lists people alive in 1961, plus one generation back. The DNB lists famous people alive or dead but with limited geneaology.
I do not have Burkes Landed Gentry, unfortunately. Many of the requests I have received are likely to be found in this work, which you might find at a library or you could ask on this site. If I put ''Try Landed'' in an answer it means try in this work.

I traced one line of my family back to William the Conqueror (although most lines peter out into illiterate farm labourers in the 19C)

Hoping information will tell me if we are related to his descendant, which would crack my 35+ year old brickwall. (We met her when we visited Ireland when I was a child.)

I can't find him in Burke which means he probably was not nobility. He died in 1950 which is before my copy of Kelly which only shows people alive plus their parents so as Robert did not have a son he won't be there.
I expect you know the following:
Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, the South Staffordshire Regiment in 1914 and again in 1915. Born 3 July 1868, second son of John Coote Ovens JP, of Aughnagaddy House, Killybegs, County Donegal. Educated at Westward House, and RMC Sandhurst. Joined the Army in 1889, rising to Lt Col commanding the Battalion in 1913. Married in 1910, to Beatrice Clibborn, of Liverpool. They had three daughters. During the course of the war, he was wounded (at the First Battle of Ypres), Mentioned in Despatches three times, awarded the CMG and Order of St Stanislas of Russia 3rd Class. He was made Temporary Brigadier-General, from 1916. After the war, he became, in succession, DAAG Musketry, Station Staff Officer 1st Class, and then a Brigade Major in India. He died in December 1950, when a resident of Mytchett, Aldershot.

I have John Villiers Farrow . Lord of the Manor of Surlingham. He died in America in 1963. From Burkes landed gentry i have a great family tree going back to Nicholas Ferrour (not Farrow ) who died before 1500. Most of the Farrow (or Ferrour) family were from Norfolk or Suffolk. I am wondering if you could please look if he is mentioned in Kellys Landed Gentry

Your man is not there, probably because he was living in America.
There are two in Kellys:
John b Sydney 1906, a famous screenwriter son of Joseph, and
Leslie b 1888 son of Albert.

If either of these is related to you I can give you the full entry.

Burke goes back a long way but it is organised by title, although there is also an index I dont know how comprehensive it is as it does not seem that long. Your two are not in the index. Do you have any idea about which title they might be connected to?

Yes John Farrow the famous screen writer is the right one . I think Villiers may have been added later. It was his mothers maiden name. He was b in Sydney and married the film star Maureen o Hara . One of their children is the film star Mia Farrow (amazement when i first found that she is my 3rd cousin )
At this stage i cant connect Leslie son of Albert to the family

I didnt know Johns fathers middle name was Rushmere--not his mothers maiden name!
The details are described in a different way to Burkes. Luckily that showed all the direct ancesters and siblings so it gave me a great fam tree

Thomas Clarkson b 1760 Wisbech Cambridge d 1846
John Clarkson b 1764 Wisbech Cambridge d 1828

Thomas Clarkson was the leading antislavery campaigner his brother John was the first Governor of Sierra Leone. I'd be interested in anything you can find for me.

Thomas Clarkson 1760-1846 philantrophist; son of the schoolmaster of Wisbeach (sic); educated at St Paul's school 1775-80; BA, St Johns College Cambridge 1783; in deacon's orders; published a prize essay against slavery 1786; agitated for the abolition of slavery 1787-94 and 1805-33; urged it on the French government 1789-90, and on the tsar 1818; granted freedom of London 1839. His works include pamphlets on slavery, theological tracts, and a memoir of William Penn.

Seems like a good bloke. I have the concise edition. Since you have helped me in the past I will check the full edition next time I am at the library.

Heckfield , Hants.

I believe he became Viscount EVERSLEY and was Speaker in the House of Commons.
I think also he may have been Govenor of The Isle of Wight but not sure of the dates these occurred.

Hi Michael,

Would you mind looking up William Ogilvie b. 1782 Holborn, London, d.1859 NSW australia. Commander in the R.N. Married Mary White 1812 at southwark, Surrey. Was given a sellection of land in australia for an award for Bravery in battle of Trafalga.

And also William Bundock b. 1766 unsure where born but lived in Paignton, Devon. Son Wellington cochrane Bundock was born there on c. 1812. He was also in the R.N. I am told.

If you are ever looking him up note that Shaw is the first half of his double barreled surname. I wasted time looking for Lefevre.
