Hi Val

Yes - it should have both her maiden name and 1st married name. It should also say whether she was single or widow when she married.

Hi Glitter baby or potty

If i order the marriage cert Mary & John Marshall
would it tell me if she had been married before.
also if mary married again would she use her married name of Bainbridge & would her maiden name be on her marriage cert?

Possible, Valerie. The census taker may have just assumed he was the son of the head and put down his surname for Matthew.

I haven't been able to find a remarriage for his mother, though.
