Helen Report 7 Nov 2007 17:06

My family although now in S Wales came in with the coal mining rush. Frederick seems to be a family name and I have records of a young frederick c8 yrs in the 1871 census. His mother is widowed Mary A Watts. Does anyone have any information about her husband?.... of perhaps her maiden name.
Thanks
Helen Watts

Hi Helen -- given young Frederick's age and birthplace, wouldn't this likely be him? --

Name: Frederick Watts
Year of Registration: 1863
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Warminster
County: Wiltshire
Volume: 5a
Page: 165

That would give his father's name and his mother's birth surname.

Likely his siblings from that census:

Name: Sarah Ann Watts
Year of Registration: 1864
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Warminster
County: Wiltshire
Volume: 5a
Page: 145

Name: Henry John Watts
Year of Registration: 1867
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Warminster
County: Wiltshire
Volume: 5a
Page: 151

This death would match up with Frederick's father's likely age and time of death:

Name: Daniell Watts
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1832
Year of Registration: 1868
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Age at Death: 36
District: Warminster
County: Wiltshire
Volume: 5a
Page: 94

Here's a Daniel Watts who married a Mary Ann Dew:

Name: Daniel Watts
Year of Registration: 1860
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Westbury
County: Wiltshire
Volume: 5a
Page: 212

-- looks like the only Daniel Watts marriage in the right time and place.

And, drumroll, here they are in the 1861 -- same details for Mary Ann as in the 1871:

Name: Mary Ann Walls
Age: 26
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1835
Relation: Wife
Spouse's Name: Daniel
Gender: Female
Where born: Dilton Marsh, Gloucestershire, England

Name: Daniel Walls
Age: 28
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1833
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Mary Ann
Gender: Male
Where born: Wotton Under Edge, Gloucestershire, England

Civil Parish: Upton Lovell
Ecclesiastical parish: Salisbury
County/Island: Wiltshire
Country: England

Registration district: Warminster
Sub-registration district: Heytesbury
ED, institution, or vessel: 5
Household schedule number: 42

Name Age
Daniel Walls 28
Mary Ann Walls 26

Ta da! Now somebody needs to fix that mistranscribed name at Ancestry.
