I have a Philemon Ellam in my tree (1814-93) possibly born in Stainland, nr Halifax, married Elizabeth (Betty) Brook in Elland in 1839. I think his father's name was Thomas and he was a waterman but this may be wrong. Any more information would be gratefully received. |

Where did you find the marriage date? You could buy the marriage certificate to verify the fathers name and occupation. |

This is the only 1839 Phelemon marrying: but no Betty Brook amongst the possible brides. Are you sure she wasnt a second wife? |

I think that may be you have assumed Betty is a "Brook" due to Hannah Brook in the same household but she may not be Betty's rellie? |

Thanks for all the information everyone, that's really kind. I have a copy of the marriage certificate but unfortunately it is pretty much illegible - I'm just guessing that Philemon's father's name is Thomas and I can't read the Christian name of Betty's father at all. I think he died quite young as her mother appears to have married again when Betty was a child and had more children. From the digging around I've done, by the way, I'm pretty sure Betty and Hannah were sisters, and Ruth and James Brook were actually Betty's children from before she was married. I never knew my relations were so scandalous! |
