Hi Alyson,

I can't tell if you were baptised or not but I know my mother baptised a baby born to her brother and his wife in the hospital as the child didn't live very long.
My mother being catholic told me the baby wasn't expective to live and she had to baptise her. I know now that the little baby girl died shortly afterwards.

Was it Mayday Hospital - that is the principal hospital for the area now? Why not write to the hospital chaplain? The address would be Mayday Road, 530 London Road, Croydon, CR7 7YE. Telephone 020 8401 3000.

Incidentally, Croydon is in the diocese of Southwark.

Oh Helen, our posts crossed. My mum & daughter-in-law both used to work at Mayday.

Alyson, try copying this link to your address bar:

Hi Alyson,

I may be able to help you.

I live in Croydon, so i know the area very well.
If you were born premature it is highly possible that you would have been baptised by the Hospital Chaplain, now there was only 2 hospitals open in 1965 in Croydon.
Mayday hospital is the teaching hospital and has an on-site Chaplaincy service available - you can contact them through the switchboard - 0208 401 3000 or there was a hospital called The Croydon General, which closed down around 15 years ago, i do not know much about this hospital but i do know that some records are still available through the Croydon Health Authority.
Failing these options, there are a few churches scattered around the hospital (a few miles between each one).

I hope this helps you.

Similar thing happened to me, Alyson, I was 6 weeks premature in 1956, they didn't think I would live and a rather religious nurse took it upon herself to name me - so if I died I wouldn't have to be buried in an unconsecrated grave. Unfortunatley for her, she didn't ask my mum, and named me Olivia. As I hadn't been registered mum sent dad out to register me - as Margaret!! LOL

There is no record of this 'Baptism' - mum wasn't given any piece of paper stating the fact, and when I had to prove I wasn't a Jew to visit Arabia, I had to go to a vicar and ask him to provide a letter stating I wasn't Jewish - as I had no intention of being baptised/christened just to prove a negative!!

Having said that, the hospital chaplain may have baptised you.

Alyson.. the Diocese.. the "area" of the Church that the records would be kept in ... the hospital would know what Diocese they would fall into.

Alyson,

I have no experience of this, but I would have thought the hospital chaplain or whatever the title is would know of records of baptisms at the hospital?
