You really do need the marriage certificate to find out the names of John's parents. After that it should be easy enough to check back census details etc.

Have you got their marriage certificate as this would give you your nan's fathers name and your grandad's father name, their ages and addresses at the time of their marriage and witness info which could be possible siblings?

Here is the information you need to order their marriage certificate

It is best to work backwards other wise you may choose the wrong birth cert to order.
