Find Ancestors

i'm trying to find out more about my father's family,but i have alot of information missing.
Firstly i know that my g-g-grandad was Ralph Hopper,born 1845 in Durham,he was a moulder.i can trace him up until the 1871 census,but after that theres no record of him.So i have no record of who he married,where he married,also this means that there is no records of my g-grandfathers birth or if he had any siblings.My g-grandfather was Thomas Hopper (could have had middle name Gray).Then after the 1901 census i have a marriage certificate for Thomas,he was wed at St Stephen Elswick Newcastle in 1905 ,(Ralph Hopper's name is on the certificate too,) Iknow my g-grandfather had connections to South Africa & Zanzibar but can't be sure if they were over there between 1871&1901.
Can any one help with census or does any one know any of the history of that time.

Any help would be brilliant.

When was Thomas born? I don't understand how you know all about Ralph without a marriage cert or a birth cert for Thomas.

i know it all confusing,on the marriage certificate it has fathers name and profession which was Ralph Hopper,moulder.By looking on the 1871 census i found a Ralph Hopper who was a moulder and traced him back.on the 1871 census he was single.My g-grandfather was 30yrs old when he got married,so he would have been born 1874/75.i've looked at the census but can't find a Thomas and Ralph in the same household but none match expect the information kindly looked up for me,which unfortnately doesn't tie in.thank you for looking.
I'm thinking that maybe i should look to when he was in South Africa for more clues.

Be careful about completely discarding any information because occupation doesn't match, or year, or town where born.



It is not unknown for occupations to change from one census to the other, and it does make us think!


Joiner and moulder could actually not be that far apart


...... a moulder MADE moulds for things, and that was usually a joiner's job if the moulds were made of wood!
