As John is widowed in 1891, one would expect to find Clara's death.........I haven't been able to...........not under the surname Pickering.

So, maybe they weren't actually married...........

I still cannot work out how you know Clara's maiden name. Unless you get the birth certificate for one of John and Clara's children it is all guesswork.

eliza,some things dont add up... there are 2 eliza pickerings in derbyshire 1871 cencus.
one b 1837..(on index 1837-1874)
.and yours b 1841.... the one b 1837 is dead by 1881 .she died j/a/s 1874...(note the b yr)ive followed her.

the male born j/a/s 1874 also died j/a/s 1874..(1837 elizas ,son)?

on the 1891 cencus in the with with "clara" and john is minnie...this is her birth

yours she would have to have got pregnant withins weeks to have another child in the sept. has the person got any certs? you realy need to get one children after 1874..i still think the 1889 is your eliza death,,,there no marriage or a death for clara...

could the john/ elizabeth and john/clara be 2 different families and i need to follow the john/elizabeth line

As both Eliza and Clara were born Swadlingcote in about the same year might it just be that the enumerator misread Eliza as Clara - it can be easily done.
Get the birth cert for Emma - that will confirm the mother's name.
