Hi

My dad received his grandmothers death cert today and it says she was murdered!!!

It says Eliza Springett died on 14 April 1924 from respiratory failure following injuries to the ribs and lungs from an assault by William Gannon. Incited and abetted at the time of assault by James Rose.

A or H Geoffrey Ellwes coroner for Colchester forwarded the death certificate to the inquest which was held on 30 April 1924 and 7 May 1924.

We have searched the internet for further info on this. Does anyone know what we can do to find out more??

Any help much appreciated.

It's quite unlikely that coroners records would still survive, although you could contact the local records office to check. Your best bet would be to find newspaper reports of the case, again via the local records office.

Hi Gail

Thanks for your help.

Is what you wrote in your last message what it says in The Times online? I have been on their website and can't get that information to appear. What did you type in the search engine?

Hi Gayle

I just put in Eliza Springett and only two articles came up, the second one was for 1924.

Gayle, is it the Times Online Archive you are looking at or the Times Online (present day) site?

I was looking on the present day site and just went on the archive site which says you need to pay a subscription of a minimum of £10! Which is annoying. Thank you for your info though, really helpful. x

No, you don't have to pay. Go to Bedfordshire Libraries and join, and it's totally free!
